Nathanael
: Nathanael is the dreamy protagonist of the story. He is 
open to the wonderful and extremely self-absorbed. He is only 
partially open to rational thinking, since feeling counts for him.

Clara
: Clara is Nathanael's fiancée and was taken in by his mother 
along with her brother Lothar after their parents' death. She is fun-
loving and rational. Because of this, she finds it difficult to take

Nathanael's father is a calm and even-tempered man, well 
respected by his family for his thoughtful manner. The children 
especially love it when he tells stories in the evening and everyone is
