Cave of Wonder
From a high-tech room called Mission Control located under Mexico’s Chihuahua Desert, a team of 
scientists is studying a natural wonder unlike anything else ever discovered on Earth: the 
Cueva de los 
Cristales
, or Cave of Crystals. Only the scientists and a few other lucky visitors have seen where the 
magnificent crystals form, a location 1,000 feet below the ground. The reason? The scalding hot and 
humid conditions in the cave make it deadly to humans.
The journey to the cave begins in Mission Control, where the visitors suit up. First, they put on vests 
lined with ice packs followed by additional vests for insulation. Next, visitors stuff themselves into bright 
orange jumpsuits. They strap on helmets that have individual lamps and breathing masks. Last, they pull 
on gloves and boots. After the visitors are fully protected, they climb into a van that rumbles for 20 or 30 
minutes down into the underground tunnels. The deeper they go, the hotter it gets. When they reach the 
steel door at the entrance to the cavern, the temperature is a steamy 112°F, with 90 to 100% humidity.
Even though it takes a lot of preparation and caution, a trip to the Cave of Crystals is worth it. Behind 
the door is a sight of heart-stopping beauty: a cavern about the size of a basketball court filled with a 
jumble of colossal pearly, pillar-like crystals. The extreme hot and wet conditions have caused the crystals, 
made of the common mineral gypsum, to grow up to 36 feet long and weigh up to 55 tons. The visitors have 
only a short time to observe the crystals. Even with the special gear, a human body can manage the 
extreme conditions inside the cave for only about 20 minutes. All too soon, the team will have to climb into 
the van for the journey back to the surface—and cool, refreshing air.
