As you read, compare how the different kinds of pasta are alike and different.
Tasty Pockets
There may be no other food as beloved the world over as filled pasta. These small pouches of rolled 
dough stuffed with delectable fillings go by many names. The United States is a melting pot of cultures, so 
there is no one pasta that is specific to the country. Around the world, however, traditional pastas have 
specific names and ingredients.
The Chinese, who invented pasta at least 4,000 years ago, have given the world wontons and 
dim sum. 
Wontons
are bow-shaped pasta pouches that are usually filled with vegetables or pork and are 
served in broth or sometimes deep-fried. 
Dim sum
is the overall name for a whole family of filled-pasta 
pockets and other tasty treats that are served in small portions for multiple people to share. Minced shrimp 
and pork are favorite fillings for dim sum rolls or dumplings. Other Asian countries have their own unique 
filled pastas as well. In Tibet, they are called 
momo
. In Japan, they are 
gyoza,
and in Korea, they are 
mandu
. In Turkey, filled pasta is called 
manti,
and in Afghanistan, they are 
mandi
.
In Europe, the center of the filled-pasta universe may well be Italy, with its ravioli and tortellini. 
Ravioli
are square, round, or triangular pasta envelopes, while
 tortellini
are tiny filled-pasta knots. Common Italian 
ravioli and tortellini stuffings are meat and cheese, but spinach, mushrooms, and pumpkin are also 
popular. People in Poland love their 
pierogis,
which are very similar to 
pelmeni
from Russia. Typical fillings 
for pierogi and pelmeni include sauerkraut, cabbage, wild mushrooms, mashed potatoes, cheese, or fruit. 
They are often simmered and then pan-fried and topped with sour cream. The filled pasta of the European 
Jewish community is the large and chewy meat-filled 
kreplach,
which is often placed in a bowl of chicken 
soup. Given how popular these delicious meals are worldwide, it is likely that filled-pasta dishes will be 
enjoyed for a long time to come.
