DAY
1
Remind students of the 
Character and Setting
skill. Say: In fiction, the characters are the people 
or animals in the story. The setting is where and when the story takes place. Tell students they 
are going to read a story about a character’s silly cat. Say: Think about how the cat’s actions affect 
the family members. Then remind students of the 
Visualization
strategy (Week 3). Say: Look for 
detail words in the passage that describe how things look, sound, or feel. This will help you make 
an accurate visualization. Have students read the instructions at the top of the page and the 
passage. When students have finished, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice 
activities. Review the answers together. Invite volunteers to share their sketches with the group.
DAY
2
Remind students of the 
Character and Setting
skill. Say: In nonfiction texts, the character is a 
person from real life. Think about a character’s actions, words, or motives in order to better 
understand why the person is important. The setting is where and when the real events took 
place. Then remind students of the 
Monitor Comprehension 
strategy (Week 1). Say: When you 
come to an unfamiliar word, use context clues in surrounding text to figure out the meaning. 
Have students read the passage. When students have finished, direct them to complete the skill 
and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.
DAY
3
Remind students of the 
Theme
skill. Say: Authors often embed messages into their writing. As 
you read, think about the lesson an author is trying to convey. Then remind students of the 
Visualization 
strategy. Say: You are going to read about first impressions. Visualize a situation
