The Benefits of the Space Program
When the United States government started the National Aeronautics and Space Administration 
(NASA) in 1958, few could have anticipated the many technological benefits it would bring for people right 
here on the ground. For example, it was possible to watch the opening ceremony of the 1964 Tokyo 
Olympic Games live on television because a NASA satellite beamed the program around the world. Ever 
since, we have enjoyed the benefits of international satellite signals.
NASA engineers continue to create new technologies that benefit everyone. The space program 
helped engineer a new option for sports stadium roofing. The very same material that is used in the 
astronauts’ spacesuits, which is designed to be flexible but is stronger than steel, is used for roofs on 
some stadiums, including the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and the Olympic Stadium in Rome. NASA has also 
developed products that have revolutionized the healthcare field. For example, technology originally 
developed to study Earth’s atmosphere is now being used in digital mammography, which is used to detect 
breast cancer. The technology helps doctors because the scans are clearer. It also helps patients because 
they are exposed to less radiation, which is dangerous in large quantities.
NASA engineers are always working on new products that can be used in space. Hopefully, their 
inventions will continue to benefit everyone back home on Earth.
