How Nevada Became a State
In 1859, miners discovered the Comstock Lode, which was a giant deposit of silver in what is now
known as Washoe County, Nevada. People quickly moved to the region and set up new communities.
Originally part of Utah Territory, Nevada was named a federal territory when the Civil War began in 1861.
While the Union would benefit from taxes on the region’s mineral wealth, President Lincoln would benefit
more from its political power as a state. The Nevada Territory was well on its way to statehood.
Historians believe that President Abraham Lincoln quickly approved of Nevada becoming its own state
because Lincoln wanted Nevada’s population to vote for him in his run for re-election. It is also believed
that Lincoln wanted to have Nevada Congress members who would be willing to approve his Emancipation
Proclamation, along with other programs that could be important after the war ended.
At the time, Union sympathizers in Nevada were so eager for statehood that they telegraphed the
entire state constitution in Morse code to Washington, D.C., so that it would get there before the
presidential election took place. In fact, Nevada became a state on October 31, 1864, shortly before
Election Day—November 8. The anniversary of that historic event is celebrated each year in the state as
Nevada Day. Because of the timing of its statehood, Nevada is called “Battle Born,” and, due to its early
mining industry, it is also known as the “Silver State.”
