som e  d ifficulties  in  tea c h in g   E nglish  to  U zbeks.  T h e  E nglish  stu ­
d ents  o f  U zb ek   w ill  h a v e   to  leam   to  distribute  the  total  «stress  en ­
ergy»  o f   his  u tteran ce  m ore  evenly  o ver  the  w hole  utterance 
in stead   o f  co n cen tratin g   it  principally  on  one  or  tw o  places,  u su ­
ally  on the  final  sy llab les.  O therw ise,  p ro n u n ciatio n  m istakes  m ay 
o c c u r w h ich are  cau sed  b y  the rh y th m ical structu re o f  U zbek.
In th e g rea t m ajo rity   o f  three-  an d   four-syllabic  w ord s  stress 
falls  on  th e  th ird   sy llab le  from   the  en d  and   this  type  o f   stress  is 
k n o w n   as 
rhythmical  accent 
in  M o d e m   E nglish,  e.  g.  radical, 
fam ily,  opinion,  o ccasio n   etc.  It  is  po ssib le  to  distinguish  tw o 
types  o f  rh yth m ical  stress:  (

)  h istorical,  o r  d iachronical  rh y th m i­
cal  stress  w h ich  is  d e te rm in e d   by   h istorical  changes  (e.  g.  French 
an d  L atin  b o rro w in g s)  and  (2)  synchronical  rhy thm ical  stress 
w h ic h   can   be  illu stra te d   in  the  w ord s 
pronunciation 
and  
exami­
nation 
in w hich  stress  falls  on  the second preto nic  sy llab le2.
T h ere  is  also  o n e   m ore  ten den cy   o f  w ord  stress,  nam ely 
re­
tentive3, 
w h ich  ch aracterizes  the  co nstant p o sition   o f  w ord  accent 
in w ord  derivatatio n .  T h e retentive tend en cy  is observed   in the  d e­
rivative  o f  one  and  th e  sam e basic  w o rd  in  w hich  accent  falls  on  a 
certain  sy llable  and  can n o t  shift its  position,  e.  g. 
hope -   'hoping
-   Tiopeful -   Tiopefully (ly) -   Tiopefulness,  life -  lively -  liveli­
ness -  livelihood.
T h e  retentiv e  ten d en cy   is  typical  in  o ther  G erm anic  lan ­
guages.  F o r ex am p le,  in  G erm an  w o rd  d eriv atio n such as
