JUNCTURES
The  A m erican  linguistists  use  the  term  
juncture  phoneme 
to 
indicate  the  distinctions  in  the  syllabic  boundary  at  the  junction  o f 
words  and  m orphem es.  W e  do  not  use  the  term   «juncture  phonem e» 
but  suggest  the  term   «juncture»  w hich  is  sufficient  to  analyse  open 
and  closed  transitions  betw een  vowels  and consonants  in  the  syllabic 
boundary o f words  and m orphem es.  Phonem es  are segm ental units o f 
language,  particularly,  units  o f the  phonological  level  of a  language. 
As  to  syllables,  stress  and  intonation  they  are  suprasegm ental  or  pro­
sodic features  o f language and as phonological units  they exist only in 
the phonological  level  o f a language.  Thus,  phonem es,  w hich  exist in 
the  form   o f speech  sounds  and  suprasegm ental  units  or  prosodem es, 
are  not equal  as  to  their function  in  a language.  Therefore,  w e  do  not 
shade  the  term s 
suprasegmental  phonemes,  juncture  phonemes, 
the accentual phonemes 
etc.  which are used by som e linguists.
The syllable division is phonologically distinctive in EngUsh.  The 
position  o f  the  syllable  boundary  at  the  junction  o f  words  or  m or­
phemes,  which  are  often  accom panied  by  differences  in  length,  pitch 
and rhythm

  can distinguish the m eanings o f words and word com bina­
tions.  Such  distinctive  units  are  term ed  «junctures»  which  m ay  be  o f 
two  types: 
open juncture
