WRITING LESSON PLAN
The aims of the lesson: Students are able to write a cause-and-effect essay, which will later be included in the “ECOLOGY POSTER” dedicated to the month of environmental problems.
Hypothetical students and what and their proficiency level: Upper-intermediate level students
The objectives of the lesson:

  • Define key terms of cause/effect;

  • Identify of cause/effect relationships in familiar text;

  • Create cause/effect scenarios.

Type of feedback: Peer feedback
Scoring criteria: Relatedness to the topic; following teacher’s suggestions; mechanics.
Tool: Peer editor’s key with correction codes; Peer feedback checklist.



Phase

Description of activities

Pre-teach

  • T introduces new vocabulary on the topic “Climate change” to students that will help in writing the essay (5 min)

  • Ss are given a sheet of paper with matching activity.

Ss are supposed to read the words from the yellow column and match them with their definitions form the neighboring green column (3min)

  • T distributes a sheet of paper with the information of the structure of cause and effect essay and discusses them with the students (5min)

  • T introduces linking words of cause-and-effect essay and how to use them effectively (5min)

Ex: as a result, consequently, therefore, due to, because of…

Pre-writing

  • T gives students real scenarios and asks what would happen.

Ex: If you left an ice cube on the hot sidewalk during the summer, what would happen? Ss should determine the cause and effect by answering the questions (7 mins)

  • T distributes a sheet with an activity to students.

Ss should read the essay and define elements of its structure using the information that they learn (5 mins)

Response

  • Ss write first drafts of their essays (15 minutes)

  • Ss reread their stories one more time to make sure sentences make sense. Add cohesion markers, pronouns, conjunctions (if needed) to make the story flow smoothly. (2mins)

  • Ss change papers with your partner and provide feedback using criteria and corresponding correction codes from the box. (3 mins)

Revising & Editing

  • Ss get back their papers and analyze what kind of mistakes they made. (5 mins)

  • T asks Ss if they agree with the feedback they received. (10 mins)

  • Ss make necessary amendments based on the feedback they received. (10 mins)

Evaluating

  • Ss proofread their essays. If Ss are satisfied with the final version, they attach their essay to the “ECOLOGY POSTER” and draw whatever comes to their minds concerning ecological problems. (5 mins)
