a straight upright position [MED: 465] рисуют образ незаметной служанки,

a way that seems strange or not normal [MED:1572], deliberately – with a definite 
intention [MED: 366] в сочетании с прилагательным polite – in a pleasant way 
[MED: 1090] свидетельствуют о том, что девушка знала о нечестности гостя и 
хотела восстановить справедливость: 
‘Yes, sir, they’re yours…You left them in Mr Schofield’s study,’ she said. Her 
voice was unnaturally, deliberately polite. ‘On top of the green filing cabinet in his 
study, sir, when you happened to go there by yourself before dinner.’ Несложно 
догадаться о том впечатлении, который произвели на всех, а, главное, на Майка 
слова служанки: 
It took a few moments for the full meaning of her words to penetrate, and in the 
silence that followed I became aware of Mike and how he was slowly drawling himself 
up in his chair, and the colour coming to his face, and the eyes opening wide, and the 
curl of the mouth, and the dangerous little patch of whiteness beginning to spread 
around the area of his nostris. 
‘Now, Michael!’ his wife said. ‘Keep calm now, Michael dear! Keep calm!’

Повтор союза and показывает, как нарастает негодование Майка. Лексемы 
silence, причастие drawing up, причастные обороты the colour coming to his face, 
the eyes opening wide, лексемы the curl of the mouth, the dangerous little patch of 
whiteness, глагол to spread лишь усиливают впечатление от слов служанки.

Абсурдность ситуации заключается в том, что и Ричард Пратт, и Майк 
Шофилд изначально были уверены в своем выигрыше. Однако ни тот, ни другой 
не ожидали такого поворота событий. 
В данном рассказе, как и в предыдущих, отсутствует развязка, а, 
следовательно, и концовка произведения.  
В рассказе “My Lady Love, My Dove” читатель знакомится с семейной 
парой – Памелой и Артуром – любителями поиграть в бридж и подслушивать за 
своими гостями. В экспозиции рассказа Артур и Памела обсуждают своих гостей 
– тоже семейную пару, которые вот-вот должны прибыть для очередной игры: 
On this Friday afternoon, I was in my chair and feeling as comfortable as ever 
with a book in my hands…when my wife, who has never been a silent lady, began to 
speak to me from the sofa opposite. 
“…But don’t you think they’re awful?” she said pointing at me with her finger. 
“Well…” 
“They’re too awful, they really are.” 
“We can hardly put them off now, Pamela.” 
“They’re absolutely the end,” she said. 
“Then, why did you ask them?”… 
“You know very well why I asked them,” she answered sharply. “For bridge, 
that’s all. They play an absolutely first-class game, and for a decent stake” [Dahl, 
1991: 481- 482].
Прилагательное awful – unpleasant [MED:82], адвербиальная конструкция 
absolutely the end, наречие sharply – in a severe way [MED: 1307] показывает, что 
Памела раздражена и чем-то обеспокоена, ей явно не по душе эта пара. Завязкой 
сюжета можно считать момент, когда Памела задумывает установить 
подслушивающее устройство в спальне, где Генри и Салли Снейп будут
