Но самым необычным оказался тот факт, что, по словам хозяйки, эти 
постояльцы все еще находятся у нее в своих комнатах и никуда не уезжали. 
Билли пытался вспомнить, откуда ему известны имена этих молодых людей. Ему 
кажется, что он читал в газетах о пропаже этих людей с похожими фамилиями:
 ‘I suppose he left fairly recently,’ Billy said. He was still puzzling his head about 
the two names. He was positive now that he had seen them in the newspapers – in the 
headlines. ‘Left?’ she said, arching her brows. ‘But my dear boy, he never left. He’s 
still here. Mr Temple is also here. They’re on the third floor, both of them together.’ 
Глагол to puzzle – to make someone worry and think hard, by being difficult to 
understand [MED: 1151] сообщает о том, что молодой человек был в 
замешательстве. Фразы «… he never left. He’s still here» создают у читателя 
эффект обманутого ожидания, показывают всю абсурдность ситуации. 
“Billy set down his cup slowly on the table, and stared at his landlady” [Dahl, 
1991: 9]. 
Все это подводит к кульминации произведения и еще более усиливает 
эффект обманутого ожидания. Билли Уивер обратил внимание хозяйки на то, что 
попугай в клетке так и не двинулся с места с момента его прихода. Женщина 
заявила, что это искусно выполненное чучело птицы и что сделала она его сама. 
Более того, чучелом оказалась и собака породы такса, выглядевшая, словно 
живая: 
‘That parrot,’ he said at last… I could have sworn it was alive… It’s most 
terribly clever the way it’s been done. It doesn’t look in the least bit dead” [Dahl, 1991: 
10]. Каково же было изумление Билли, когда выяснилось, что чучела животных 
сделала сама хозяйка пансиона. 
‘Who did it?’ 
‘I did.’

‘It must be most awfully difficult to do a thing like that.’

…The tea tasted faintly of bitter almonds, and he [Billy] didn’t much care about it’

В самом конце рассказа женщина попросила молодого человека 
расписаться в гостевой книге на случай, если вдруг она забудет, как его зовут. 
Хозяйка дает понять Билли, что за последние три года он – единственный новый 
постоялец в ее пансионе: 
‘You did sigh the book, didn’t you’ 
‘Oh, yes.’
