oRIgAmI on WATER
The Villa is designed for an art collector who lived in Asia for many years. The architecture is inspired by the 
clients wish to create and live in a place with a strong personal feel, embracing his interests in art and Asian 
philosophy. The whole concept is based on origami, the old traditional Japanese art of paper folding from the 
17th century, where the goal is to transform only a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding 
and sculpting techniques. The walls and roofs are made thin and sharp to visually express the look of a single 
giant origami paper, which are folded into a villa. The villa is then placed on a water reflection basin, which 
underlines the fragility and poetry of the origami. The water floats inside the bearing walls and dissolves the 
distance between inside and outside. Towards the ocean, the water creates an infinity view, amplifying the feel-
ing of being one with nature.

Based on a traditional U-shaped building, the goal is to create a more 3-dimensional architecture, where func-
tions, surfaces and volumes are split into individual elements and then reassembled into a new composition. 
The individual volumes and functions appear solely as independent units, as they are part of an overall compo-
sition, which together provides a 3-dimensional overall experience of the building. The individual volumes are 
archetypal in their main structure, but are then added something surprisingly and irrationally, to let the poetry 
and the spiritual wander into the architecture. The villa is a study of how to experience the journey from the 
humanly defined nordre Strandvej via ramps and stairs, and move through various clearly defined architec-
tural spaces down to the water’s own defined landscape space and horizontal plane. The facades are made in a 
special matt white plaster that supports the architecture, and has the ability to reflect the changing shades and 
colors during the day and the over the seasons. The window sections are set back in the facades to highlight 
the visual experience more 3-dimensionally.
