THE mAnSHAuSEn ISLAnd RESoRT
Manshausen island is situated in the Steigen Archipelago off the 
coast of northern norway and is home to the world´s largest 
population of Sea Eagles. The island´s position between majes-
tic mountains and the Barents Sea is in itself the inspiration for 
the design. The resort is organized with guestrooms as individ-
ual cabins placed at the tip of the rocky formations of the island, 
where the positioning in the landscape ensures an immersive, 
yet private, view to the majestic nature and the elements outside. 
The shelter design endeavors to make a minimum environmen-
tal impact with minimum footprint and the use of cross laminat-
ed timber construction. The old farmhouse was renovated and 
converted to restaurant and library and a sauna was made in the 
natural pond using left over materials.

EfjoRd RETREAT
Efjord is a branch off the ofoten fiord in northern norway. The 
client desired a retreat that focused on the panoramic views of 
the site, but which also transported them to a feeling of isola-
tion and total privacy, away from hectic work-days in the city. 
The conceptual layout opens and closes the building in different 
directions, where the eastern part of the cabin closes towards 
some neighbouring buildings and opens towards a ridge and 
the close terrain on the other side. The opposite directions are 
sought at the front end of the cabin, opening up to the magnifi-
cent views towards the dramatic mountains and the fiord to the 
west. The two volumes are slightly offset to provide for sheltered 
outdoor areas and views towards the fiord also from the rear 
volume.

pRIVATE RETREAT
The clients are a family with small children, and also wanted room for the larger family and friends. The con-
ceptual layout was conceived as several individual volumes connected via in-between spaces and a central 
winter garden, placed on a natural shelf in the terrain. The organisation provides both privacy and room for 
several activities at the same time. The central winter garden, with fireplace and outdoor kitchen, function as 
the entrance to the building. From here the retreat opens up to the natural clearing in the forest and from here 
you enter into either the main building or the annexe. Each group of rooms are done as separate volumes to 
achieve an additional layer of privacy, but also to emphasize the transition between spaces and activities and 
tell a story of everyday journeys.
