Stages of classroom investigation in FLT.

2.The three steps to teaching classroom procedures
1. Why is it necessary to have a 3 step approach to teaching procedures? Validate the importance of each step. A: Essentially, the three steps are broken down into introduction and demonstration; clarification and practice; further clarification and/or commending correct behavior. In the first step, students need to see and hear a procedure through teaching modeling, visual aids and discussions via Q & A. In the second step, anything in the procedure not understood by the students must be practiced to insure that the procedure is universally understood. Lastly, the procedure must be reinforced through not only practice, but are there further explanations required? And if the procedures are understood in theory and in practice, has the instructor commended or rewarded the proper behavior. 2. Can you “over teach” a procedure? When do you know that the class has had enough? A: any procedure or subject for that matter can be over-taught. Any perceptive instructor should be able to tell when her students “get it” and more defining and demonstrating falls on death ears. Students can grow impatient and if “the rolling of eyes” doesn’t signal to Ms. Smith that perhaps she is over-teaching a clearly and measurably understood procedure, the students may in fact vocalize their objects with “ah, we all get it, Ms. Smith” or “we’re not dumb, Ms. Smith; it’s kind of obvious what you want us to do.” This over-teaching could be detrimental to the introduction of new procedures in the future by creating an underlying sense of resistance in the procedurally-overburdened classroom. 3. What is one way that having procedures in place will improve the teaching/learning experience in your classroom? A: without a doubt, having procedures in place will improve the teaching/learning experience in my classroom because much less time will be wasted at the beginning of each class session. Procedures establish standard classroom processes and a predicable environment where directions are clear and time is not wasted with repeated questions, lend to an environment that foster distractions and behavioral issues. Examples of procedures I would use would include assignments for the day are always written on the board .
After ten minutes, take a break, go for a walk, or do something else. Come back to your list after a break and record anything else that you might have come to mind. There’s a list below to get you started! At the beginning of the year, spend quite a bit of time on classroom procedures. Model them all. Model the wrong way to do them. Then model the right way to do them. Practice them over and over again. Praise the students you see completing the procedures accurately. As the back-to-school season wanes, you will spend less and less time on classroom procedures because students will have internalized the systems you have put in place. You can now turn your attention to teaching content vs. processes. However, you will need to review classroom procedures throughout the year. 5
When might you need to review them? Well, when things aren’t working the way you want them to work. Students will likely need a review and reminder of classroom procedures after a long break. They may need reminders and quick reviews after a few days with a substitute teacher. The other time of year that I tend to spend more time review procedures is the spring when students have become very comfortable in the classroom and test the boundaries. They’re almost at the end of the school year, they’re older, wiser, and familiar with your classroom. This is the time of year when things could get out of control, so taking time to reaffirm procedures is key to your end of the year classroom management.
Here are 19 Classroom procedures that you should consider implementing in your classroom. These are standard elementary classroom procedures that students and teachers go through on a daily or weekly basis. Using a doorbell is popular these days. You can find a ton of different ones on Amazon (affiliate link). While I have used a tool, like a bell, as a quiet signal, the most effective one has always been my voice. Over the years I have used different ones voice signals. Sometimes I count down verbally while also counting on my fingers. Other times I’ll use a Whole Brain Teaching routines.6
