Great Britain. Position & Climate.

Great Britain is also called the United Kingdom of Great Britain. It is situated on a group of islands lying to the West of Europe. The United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. All its parts are self-governed. The population of Great Britain is about 60 million people.
Long ago the greater part of the country was covered with forests. Now there are practica-lly no fores-ts there. But there are many trees and greenery which make the country really beautiful. There are a lot of rivers, lakes, hills and mountains there. The rivers of Britain are not long, they never freeze in winter. Many of them are joined by canals. So people can travel by water from one end of the country to the other. The longest rivers are considered the Thames and the Severn. London, the capital of the United Kingdom, stands on the river Thames.
The climate in Britain is mainly mild and wet because of the warm Gulf Sream. In England there is much rain and fog.
