  1. Everybody knows that one gesture may interpret differently in different cultures. So we should be careful while using them and do not use them in other countries, if we are not aware of their meaning. For instance, _________________________ means “O-Key” in the USA and the UK, however, the same gesture means “having no money” in Japan, “zero” in France.

  2. During the Soviet Union the President M.Brejnev went to the USA and after finishing his speech he ___________________ over his head, which had been interpreted wrongly by Americans. They thought that Mr Brejnev had won their president in making the speech, as this gesture means “victory” in their culture. But it means “friendship” in Russian culture.

  3. Another gesture, _________________________ means “wishing you a good luck”, or this gesture is used by the children when they are lying, they may keep their hands at the back of their body. This is common for Eastern culture, whereas, if you use this gesture in Western culture, you may be blamed as this is a very bad gesture there.

  1. In western cultures, people ______________ at someone or something in the room using index _______________. It is impolite to ________________ with an index ________________ in the Middle and Far East. They use an open hand or their thumb.

  2. If we want to call someone or say to come here people usually ______________. However, in Phillippines using this gesture is considered to be very rude and if you ___________________ to someone you may be arrested or even they may cut your finger for doing this.

  3. ________________ up and down to mean “yes” in most cultures, however in Bulgaria and Greece it means “no”.

  4. In Pakistan you mustn’t _________________. It is offensive.

  5. In Italy people don’t ________________ when they are going to greet each other. Instead they give a kiss on both cheeks. In America we have the standard greeting “Hello, my name is …..”. With a hand shake while in Japan people bow. The more you bow the more respect you show to the person with whom Japanese are greeting.

  6. In India ______________________ means “yes”. But in many cultures it means “no”. That’s why when you go to India, be careful while using this gesture.

  7. In Thailand you should _______________________ together and lower your head and your eyes when you greet someone.
