INTRODUCTION Teaching foreign languages is one of the main objectives of modern education systems in the world. Foreign languages are valued along with other academic subjects in many specialties in our country as well. Even greater attention is being paid to teaching and learning English in our country after the issue of the first President I. Karimov’s decree “On further improvement of foreign languages learning system”1 Reading is one of the English skills which are essential to be mastered by the students. Reading skills are necessary for students in acquiring knowledge and new information. According to Brown that reading is the most essential skill in the educational context as it can be the assessments for students’ general language ability.
Reading comprehension is one aspect of language skills that must be mastered by the student. To be able to interpret and absorb information from reading material, students should have good understanding ability.
Reading is the information from the text, either in the form of text or from a picture or diagram, or a combination of it all. Reading is also a skill to know, see and understand the contents of what they read. That is, after reading something, the reader already knows the information obtained from what he has read. One important point of reading is to understand the communication between writer and reader.
The topicality of the course paperis the study of reading comprehension is the process of making sense of words, sentences and connected text. Readers typically make use of background knowledge, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, experience with text and other strategies to help them understand written text.
Reading comprehension is required in each subject, because each lesson is inseparable from the act of reading. Therefore, students are required to have good understanding capabilities. In the fact, there are still many problems in the learning process of reading comprehension. Sometimes students are only required to read the text in the heart, and then answer questions related to the content of the text. It is a way that does not involve the process of thinking students so that students are not involved in active reading process. Indeed, each lesson will not be separated from the communicative method. But if in any learning simply used by communicative method the students will be visible only be passive and just as an object of learning do not as a subject of learning so that will be difficult to develop students’ thinking process. The used of suitable strategies that will be one of the determinants in teaching learning. Even in terms of learning reading comprehension.
The theme of the course paper consists in the new way of looking at the problem of teaching reading. Since teaching reading comprehension was always underestimated in teaching English as a second language, nonetheless it plays a great role in second language acquisition.
Researchs and classroom practices support the use of a balanced approach in teaching reading comprehension. Because reading comprehension depends on efficient word recognition and comprehension,instruction should develop reading skills and strategies, as well as build on learners’ knowledge through the use of authentic texts.
The aim of the course paperis to analyze the existent problems in teaching reading comprehension and find the ways out of this problem by suggesting a series of exercises that can be useful in classroom activities.
Thus, according to the set aim we are to solve the following tasks:
-to determine the aim and nature of teaching reading comprehension;
-to open the essence of to describe the reading skills and teaching technics;
-to describe different approaches to teaching reading;
- to work out new technologies in teaching reading;
The scientific novelty: few would dispute the claim that comprehension is necessary in order for language acquisition to occur. In order to communicate effectively, learners must understand what is being said. To function successfully with a target language, learners depend upon their ability to comprehend the spoken and written word. Empirical studies have identified a positive relationship between listening ability and language acquisition as well as between reading ability and language acquisition.
The theoretical and practical value of the course paper consist in the material that was used during the investigation work which may be used in further researches and be helpful in lectures on methodology of the English language as well as to teachers and students in their practical lessons. Material under analysis is the literature on the theme of the work. 2 The method or strategy used should be able to improve students' reading comprehension. The lack using of method or learning strategies become one of the bottlenecks achievement of learning goals. The selection of methods for each learning the teacher must attention to the character of the students. Methods or strategies used is not only one, but also can be varied by other methods so that students do not feel tired or bored in learning process. When students are motivated to learn well and it will facilitate in providing instruction to students so that learning becomes conducive and pleasant. Therefore, the goal of learning will be achieved.
