Terminology 
Considering the big diversity of tools, the unification 
of terminology of soil tillage tools and methods is a 
necessity. For instance, when one speaks of chisel-
type implements, we can think of about ten tine types: 
vertical rigid, tilted rigid, double-tilted rigid, rigid 
parabolic, simple spring, double spring, Danish 
spring, spring (queu of pig), spring-mounted rigid and 
to about ten chisel share types: straight, chi1el share, 
diamond pointed, twisted, duckfoot, sweep, stubble 
share, winged share (

). This provokes a lot of 
confusion at the user end and especially gives back 
the difficult test reproducibility and the 
Thus, several works, as quoted below, showed the 
influence of these factors on performances of tools. 
We propose the classification adapted 
from [1] and which takes account of the
following factors: 

type of tool (disks, moldboard, tine,
miscellaneous) [2]; 

hitch types (rear, frontal, central);

type of action (passive, active, mixed). The passive 
tools take their energy from their forward 
movement, compound to the shape of their 
engaging components (action by shearing, 
pressure, friction). The active tools permit to have 
a forced action directly on soil by means of a 
transmission of the energy of the motor. This type 
frees the tractor of traction limitations between the 
tire and soil and permit s in general to reach the 
wished structure more quickly. The mixed 
implements are tools where a part of engaging 
components are powered by the transmission of 
the forward movement and its conversion in 
forced action (example: dyna-drive). Also there is 
the passive tools vibrating where engaging
components or the frame are submitted to
vibrations that have for object to improve the 
quality of work and/or to decrease the traction 
force [1, 3, 4, 5, 6]; 



soil engaging components. The engaging 
component in soil is determinant in the action that 
will be applied on the soil through its size and its 
shape (curvatures and angles of construction). It is 
known that a cylindrical moldboard is more 
aggressive and apply more pressure on soil than a 
helical one. It is also known, that more the radius 
of curvature of a disk is small more its action on 
soil is intense. But on the contrary, his penetra-
tion is more difficult and his self-cleaning is less 
insured and under a certain tilt angle, the 
compaction of stripe bottom increases [10, 11, 12, 
13, 14, 15];

angles of installation of engaging components and 
their arrangement.
The angles of engaging component installation 
influence the economy of energy, the intensity of 
work, the mixing effect (case of the tooth trail of the 
rotary cultivator) or the effect of sorting (case of the 
tooth in claw) [7, 13, 15, 16]. 
The Club of Bologna can play a central role in 
coordinating this activity, in order to e stablish a 
uniform and precise classification of soil tillage 
equipment and methods.
