The following childhood precursors of personality
disorders can be considered in assessment:
Paranoid Personality Disorder:
This is uncom-
mon in adolescence. Those presenting with suspi-
cious, distrustful or apparently paranoid features
should be assessed to exclude drug abuse, par-
ticularly cocaine dependency, and communication
problems such as a hearing impairment. Delin-
quent adolescents who have criminal records may
also present as suspicious, distrustful and anti-
authoritarian on the basis of negative experiences
with care and courts systems.
