OF LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
The top part of Figure 8.1, adapted from a causal
model of developmental disorders [1], illustrates
the relationship between language development
and some of the factors known to affect it. This sim-
plified model illustrates the interaction between
the child’s genetic endowment and his or her envi-
ronment, as would be the case in any area of devel-
opment. In the case of language development, the
human genotype enabled a species-specific endow-
ment for linguistic processing [2], the precise extent
of which is still not entirely known. The model also
specifies a key role played by the environment,
both in the form of human (social) interaction
