particular gene or DNA sequence. The full extent to which copy-number variation
contributes to human disease is not yet known.
Deletion mutation:
A mutation that involves the loss of genetic material. It can be small,
involving a single missing DNA base pair, or large, involving a piece of a chromosome.
Diploid number:
Refers to the number of chromosomes in a human somatic cell. Such a cell
normally contains 46 chromosomes, comprising two complete haploid sets (see ‘Haploid
number’), which together make up the 23 homologous chromosome pairs.
DNA:
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the molecules inside cells that carry genetic information and pass
it from one generation to the next.
