means that they must be able to communicate with each other. In
computer usage, this means we must have a communication protocol
that will enable this kind of conversation.
One such protocol is BACnet (Building Automation and Control Net-
work), developed as an ASHRAE Standard for this purpose. (See Ref.
5.) There are several other similar protocols which are proprietary in
nature. There is, at this writing, no accepted industry standard. How-
