nis like him again.
Except the fans aren’t packing
anything right now, because, well,
you know.
I asked Federer how he ex-
pected he’d adapt to the low-
crowd vibe, and he said he’d
thought about this, watching all
that tennis on TV, including the
empty U.S. Open final, and it had
made him feel bad for the players.
“Playing for so much, in front of
nobody,” is how he put it.
As he does, though, Federer
chose to spin it optimistically—in
the early rounds, he said, the quiet
stadiums wouldn’t matter as much,
because he was accustomed to
playing practice matches in pri-
vate, and besides, there were go-
ing to be some fans in Doha, up to
2,000 on center court, perhaps,
and maybe that would be noisy
enough to make it fun.
“Even if it’s just 100 people—
like, playing music in a little bar
with 100 people, it can make a
great atmosphere,” he said.
