Tyson is tackling this by de-
ploying technology that in-
cludes robotic arms to package
poultry and digital platforms
for sales teams to identify con-
sumption trends. Employees
are also now equipped with
data they can look up on smart-
phones that gives updates on
warehouse inventory, transpor-
tation and even animal welfare.
“Two years ago when I was
preparing for a board meeting I
noticed that the components in
a breakfast sandwich took many
different stops to get to me,”
said Mr. Spradley. “Thousands
of miles are involved bringing
together ingredients and pack-
aging for one of our breakfast
sandwiches. If we can reduce
that mileage using technology
then costs would come down.”

To survive limits on indoor
dining, some owners sunk
thousands of dollars into to-go
operations, outdoor patios and
other means of selling. Owners
are debating what to keep as
they try to understand custom-
ers’ mind-sets.
