Death Toll Rises to
At Least 98 in Blasts
Hundreds of rescue workers
and volunteers fanned out
across devastated neighbor-
hoods in Equatorial Guinea’s
largest city on Monday, search-
ing for survivors a day after a
series of massive explosions in
the Central African nation killed
at least 98 people.
Television footage showed
pickup trucks, taxis, vans and
ambulances crisscrossing the
port city of Bata, carrying people
who had been wounded in Sun-
day’s blasts. The explosions were
triggered by improperly stored
dynamite kept in a military base,
President Teodoro Obiang
Nguema Mbasogo said Sunday.
By Monday, clinics had run
out of beds, according to state
media. The country’s Health Min-
istry said more than 600 were
hospitalized. Officials said they
expect the death toll to climb.
On Monday, the main opposi-
tion party accused Mr. Obiang of
mishandling the crisis, which it
said was revealing the poor state
of the oil-rich country’s health-
care system.

Pope Defends Trip
To Iraq Amid Risks
Pope Francis responded to
public-health concerns about his
trip to Iraq by saying he had
considered the dangers, but ulti-
mately trusted in God to protect
Iraqis.
Several events during the
pope’s visit to Iraq, which in-
cluded a Mass with 10,000 peo-
ple in a soccer stadium, drew
crowds of people with wide-
spread flouting of rules on so-
cial-distancing and mask-wear-
ing. Apart from the Mass, some
gatherings formed as Iraqis tried
to get a glimpse of the pontiff.
“I thought so much, I prayed
so much over this, and finally I
made a decision,” Pope Francis
said Monday as he returned to
Rome. “I said: He who leads me
to decide as I did will take care
of the people. And so I made the
decision, but after prayer and
with mindfulness of the risks.”
