One can be a numeral, a personal pronoun, and a noun-substitute.

Numeral one

As a numeral, one can be a determiner or a pronoun:

I just have one question to ask you.

(determiner)

One morning he just got up and left. We’ve never seen him since.

(determiner)

My one regret is that I never visited Thailand when I lived in the region.

(determiner)

I don’t need a lot. Just give me one for now.

(pronoun)

One can also be a substitute form for a singular or plural count noun:

A: How about a coffee?

B: OK, I’ll just have a small one.

Are these the ones you ordered?

A: Can you pass me the shoes?

B: Which ones?

A: The red ones.

One is not used to substitute for non-count nouns:

A: Have you got any sugar?

B: Yes.

A: Can I borrow some?

(Can I borrow one?)

When one substitutes for a noun, it refers back to a previous noun and cannot

normally be used to refer forward:

I saw a black car at the traffic lights. But it was a very old one.

(I saw a black one at the traffic lights. But the car was a very old.)
