Lights go out on season’s best Premier Division crowd
The first of the campaign’s Dog & Duck derbies between AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Wellingborough took place on Boxing Day, and not too surprisingly drew the Premier Division’s largest crowd of the season so far with 742 spectators present. Sadly the fans did not see the game completed as the floodlights failed after 65 minutes with the contest still goalless.
Diamonds have announced that admission for the rescheduled fixture will be on a ‘pay what you want’ basis.
The New Year’s Day return saw further floodlight problems experienced although the match was completed on this occasion with goals from Scott Joseph and Tom Lorraine giving Diamonds a 2-1 victory.
Nolan helps Tigers close the gap
The latest addition to the powerful Holbeach squad is experienced front runner Matt Nolan, who joins the Tigers from St Neots.
Nolan started his career with Peterborough United and has played for a number of high level non league clubs including Hitchin, Kings Lynn and Lowestoft. He was part of the Corby Town squad which won the Southern League under current Holbeach co-boss Graham Drury.
The new man was quick to make an impact in Holbeach colours with the decisive goal in the Boxing Day defeat of Wisbech which took the Tigers to within five points of leaders AFC Rushden & Diamonds in the end of year Premier Division table.
Midfielder Jake Gibson will miss the next month of the Tigers’ promotion push while travelling overseas.

Youngsters catching the eye for Walnut Boys
AFC Kempston ended 2014 with a flourish, winning all four of their December fixtures to move into the top half of the Premier Division at year’s end.
Graduates from the club’s under 21 side have featured prominently with Billy Pinney, Brendan Macrae, James Hirst, Charisma Agyemang and George Shrieves all involved in the win at Boston Town on 20th December.
Full back Danny Winfield has returned to the club after a break from the game but central defender Grant Fryer has moved on to AFC Dunstable.
Fenmen dual register Spalding duo
Wisbech topped up their squad over the holiday by snapping up Spalding defender or midfielder Luke Thurlbourne and midfielder Luke Webb on dual registration. The pair both featured in the Boxing Day reverse at Holbeach.
Free scoring winger Billy Smith has been sidelined by a knee injury, joining top scorer Josh Ford on the sidelines. The pair’s absence has seen reserve team youngster Jacob Smith handed a senior chance which he grabbed with both hands, scoring against both Eynesbury and Bugbrooke in his first two appearances in the first team.
Familiar faces return to Star colours
Peterborough Northern Star have signed two familiar faces in recent weeks with Jon Stead and Dan Banister both making returns to the Mick George Arena on dual registrations from Southern League St Ives.
Stead was a key man in the club’s run to the FA Vase quarter finals three years ago, while Banister was briefly with Star after his release from Northampton Town around the same time.
Top scorer Avelino Vieira was absent for much of the December programme with a persistent groin injury while defensive lynchpin Jonny Clay also sat out the Yaxley game on the final Saturday of 2014 with a similar complaint.
Desborough strengthen squad
Desborough have strengthened their squad during the closing weeks of 2014, introducing a sprinkling of new faces to the Waterworks Field squad.
Kettering youngster Ryan Clifton has linked up with Ar Tarn while left back Lewis Jackson has returned following a brief spell with Stamford. Midfielder Ben Sunderland, one of Ian Walker’s first signings as Desborough manager, is also available while on vacation from Birmingham University.

Sileby add to squad
Sileby have added two new faces to their squad towards the end of the year.
Goalkeeper Shaun Edwards has signed from Midland League Studley while winger Sam Gyasi was previously with Bedford Town.
Manager Daren Young has also welcomed back a host of injured players for the start of the news year with defenders Randy Bondjanga and Dan Dineen, midfielder Sam Maude and front men Richard Moore and Dominic Okanu all available for selection.
Eynesbury in strong finish to year
Eynesbury ended the year in fine form as three successive wins to end 2014 lifted them clear of the relegation battle. Rovers notched up away successes at high riding pair Peterborough Northern Star and Huntingdon either side of their biggest win of the campaign, a 6-0 drubbing of Sileby on December 20th. Youngster Alex Marsh has been in fine form during the winning run, scoring five goals including a hat trick against Sileby.
A recent addition to the playing ranks is defender Dan Woodhead, who rejoins the club from Cambs League outfit Eaton Socon.
Italian signing for Doughboys
Wellingborough have added an Italian to their squad with language student Luca Buonara linking up with the Doughboys. He previously played for ASD Roccasecca in his home country, but is yet to make his Wellingborough debut after returning home for the holidays.
Experienced defender Jamie Wright has been sidelined by a medial ligament injury while striker Alfie Taylor has left the Dog & Duck after five games and two goals for the club.
Low key end to the year for Huntingdon
The most successful year in Huntingdon Town’s history has ended on a low note with just one of the final seven league games of 2014 ending in victory and the Cromwellians losing their grip on the Knockout Cup.
Wide man Dan Moyes returned from St Ives in time to play in the Boxing Day derby with Eynesbury while midfielder Jack Warwick and front runner Chris Jones should soon be back from injury.
Buckby break their duck
Long Buckby picked up their first Premier Division win of the season on 6th December with a hat trick from Muzi Nduna-Ndlovu and singles from Ed Kostiuk and Amadeus Clements giving them a 5-3 victory at Harrowby. Either side of the win Buckby drew with Harborough and Cogenhoe, only a last minute goal denying them victory at Compton Park. Former Cooks midfielder or forward Nathan Liburd is the latest addition to the Bucks squad.

Fife takes the Saints reins
St Neots Town Youth & Saints have handed Anton Fife the managerial reins. He succeeds Andy Davies who left the club in November.
As a player Fife was on the books of Peterborough United, Northampton Town and Rushden & Diamonds. He has coached at a number of academies and coaching schools and now takes up a first appointment in senior football.
The new manager’s first signing is his son Jordan who had a few games for the club in their inaugural season.
Spencer end 2014 on a high
Northampton Spencer ended 2014 on top of the Division One table with games in hand on their promotion rivals.
The Millers signed off the year with eleven successive league victories, starting in October. Their 3-1 Boxing Day derby victory at ON Chenecks lifted them to the top of the table for the first time this term.
A recent addition to the Spencer squad is wide man Deanio Bailey-Browne from Division One rivals Olney.
Olney add to strikeforce
Olney manager Steve Kuhne has added to his strikeforce during December, snapping up Buckingham pair Drew Mitten and Joel McCormick. The pair had scored fifteen Division One goals for the Robins this term, Mitten outscoring his strike partner by nine goals to six.
McCormick was on the mark against his former club on Boxing Day helping the Nurserymen overturn a two goal deficit to run out 3-2 winners.
Kuhne has also recruited one of his St Neots Saints squad from last season, winger Junior Muya who has been with Southern League Arlesey this season.
New duo bolster Corinths squad
Rothwell Corinthians have added a couple of new faces to their squad as they aim to make a late bid for promotion.
A ten match run yielding 25 points left Corinths on the fringes of the promotion race at the end of the year, but with games in hand over many of their rivals.
Two players who were part of Harborough’s promotion winning squad have now checked in at Sergeant’s Lawn. Defender or midfielder Martin Anderson has been recruited from Oadby while midfielder Alex McMillan was recently with Borough Alliance in the Northants Combination.

Petts in Thrapston return
Thrapston legend Gary Petts has returned to Chancery Lane to take on the post of club chairman, replacing Kevin O’Brien who has now taken on admin duties as secretary.
Petts gave the club lengthy service as a player, joining in 1987 and was then a highly successful manager of the club from 1992 to 2004. He won the Northants Junior Cup with the club on three occasions, once as a player and twice as manager. After his earlier spell at Thrapston he took the reins at Sileby from 2004 to 2012, leading them to the Division One title in his first season at the helm.
On the field the club has welcomed back defender Dan Pegg from Harborough.
Familiar faces return to Robins
Buckingham manager Chris Robson has been active in the transfer market recently in a bid to climb the Division One table.
Midfielder Joe O’Reagan and forward Ashley Wadhams have been recruited from local football in Luton and another front runner Dean Bland has returned to the squad after a spell as player manager of North Bucks League Stewkley. Utility man Kyle Stimpson is another familiar face who arrives from Wolverton.
Two new men link up with Bugbrooke
Bugbrooke manager Colin Cooper has added a couple of new faces to his squad in recent weeks.
Midfielder Jake Cayton was a regular in Cooper’s successful second string at Cogenhoe and has featured regularly in the Cooks’ senior squad this term.
Young defender or midfielder Billy Fleury has joined the Badgers from Dunstable.
The Badgers’ second string lost their unbeaten record in the Reserve Division on 20th December when they were outgunned 4-3 at Potton. They had eleven wins and six draws in their previous seventeen matches.

Stones add two
Recently appointed Blackstones manager Neil Cotton is still searching for his first reward at the helm after his side suffered December defeats against Whitworth and Rothwell Corinthians, but there was some good news in those matches with striker Addie Staffieri scoring in both after returning to action following his pre season injury.
Two new faces have been introduced to the squad with midfielder Pete Smith rejoining the club from Yaxley and wide man or striker Kieran Hart arriving from Sunday football.
Long term injury victim Sam Strange should resume training early in the new year after being sidelined since September.
Chenecks unbeaten run ended
ON Chenecks saw their long unbeaten run ended on 20th December when going down 3-2 at Irchester. They had picked up 33 points from their previous thirteen Division One matches, winning ten and drawing three since a home defeat by Lutterworth Athletic early in September.
Potton miss out on new record
Potton missed out on a new club record of successive clean sheets when losing 3-2 at home to Whitworth on December 6th. They had kept out the opposition in seven successive Division One matches during October and November to match their previous best in UCL football, set in 1982.
Goalkeeper Craig Lewis went unbeaten for eleven hours and eight minutes of play give or take a few minutes of stoppage time!
Snippets
Harrowby have signed defender Ollie Price from Blackstones….Sleaford have recruited young Lincoln City left back Calum Stewart on work experience…..Raunds have front man Luke Stevens back in the fold from a spell with Thrapston and he was on the scoresheet in the Boxing Day victory at Irchester…..Rushden & Higham have snapped up goalkeeper Craig Patterson from Wellingborough…..Stewarts & Lloyds have signed a familiar face from more successful times in Paul Caswell who joins on dual registration from Corby Eagles….At the turn of the year Long Buckby had used the most players in the Premier Division (49) with Thurnby and Wisbech using the fewest (24)….In Division One Stewarts & Lloyds had utilised 78 players in their matches with the fewest called upon by Woodford – a far cry from the 113 they handed appearances to in 2013-14!

Holders out of Knockout Cup
League Knockout Cup holders Huntingdon are out of the current season’s competition after losing 3-0 at Yaxley in their First Round tie. The Cuckoos progressed to the last sixteen thanks to goals from Gav Cooke, Karl Gibbs and Scott Carter. The only other tie during the last month saw a single goal from Jacob Smith on his first Wisbech start take the Fenmen through at home to Bugbrooke.
Corinths reach Reserve Knockout Cup quarters
The last eight of the Reserve Knockout Cup was completed by Rothwell Corinthians who ran out convincing 5-2 derby winners against Harborough in the last of the Second Round ties.
Lee Thomson’s hat trick and singles from Gary Clark and Tom McLaren won the tie for Corinths.
Trio remain on the Wembley trail
Three of our clubs entered the new year dreaming of Wembley after making Third Round progress in the FA Vase.
Lee Beeson’s spectacular strike took Holbeach through 1-0 at London Colney while Thurnby’s best ever run continued as they saw off visitors Bromsgrove Sporting 2-1 with goals from Ash Day and Liam Canavan. The two clubs will now meet at Dakyn Road on 17th January.
Yaxley progressed 3-1 at Brantham after trailing at the interval. Second half goals from Rob Hughes, Luke Hipwell and Dan Cotton gave the Cuckoos a fourth win over Thurlow Nunn opposition in the Vase this season. Yaxley were handed a very tough draw in Round Four, a visit to Southern Counties East League leaders Erith & Belvedere.
Three clubs failed to make home advantage count in Third Round ties. Deeping were beaten 2-1 by Heanor in extra time after Joe Braithwaite’s late goal earned them an extra half hour, while Peterborough Northern Star lost 3-2 to high scoring visitors Flackwell Heath after leading at the break with a Phil Stebbing penalty and Avelino Vieira effort. 2013-14 quarter finalists Wisbech went out 3-2 to Walsall Wood who they beat at the same stage last term. Billy Smith and Danny Beaumont twice hauled the Fenmen on terms but a last minute goal put them out.
Thurnby and Yaxley have now earned £5,000 each in prize money with Holbeach’s winnings standing at £4,400.

The December Manager of the Month awards have been won by AFC Kempston pair Jimmy Stoyles and Gary Flinn in the Premier Division and Northampton Spencer’s Ben Stone in Division One.
In the top flight the Walnut Boys duo enjoyed a maximum point month as Kempston defeated Yaxley and Newport Pagnell at home and Eynesbury and Boston Town on the road. They conceded just a single goal while scoring nine themselves as they moved four places up the division during December.
In Division One Ben Stone’s Spencer side collected maximum points from six matches to climb to the top of the table for the first time this season on Boxing Day. The Millers defeated Buckingham, Raunds and Lutterworth at home and Peterborough Sports, Woodford and ON Chenecks away from Kingsthorpe Mill, scoring 16 goals and conceding just three.

Ellwood the top December marksman
Whitworth’s 2014 came to a disappointing end with a 5-1 defeat at Rushden & Higham on Boxing Day but their goal at Hayden Road did prove crucial in determining the destiny of the December Goalscorer of the Month accolade.
Deven Ellwood’s strike took him to six December goals in just three matches, following a brace in the win at Potton on 6th December and a hat trick at Blackstones seven days later.
