THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN LAw

Annotation:
In addition to owing to being in international language of basic sources of law, 
there are some other factors of why English language is important in the sphere of law including 
flexibility, certainty and universality of this language. This article will examine these matters and 
conclude author`s views.

There are many, many reasons why learning a new language is a good idea. While It allows you 
to communicate with new people, It helps you to see things from a different perspective, or get a 
deeper understanding of another culture. It helps you to become a better listener. It even has health 
benefits, as studies have shown that people who speak two or more languages have more active minds 
later in life!
What’s more, English is the rest of the world’s “second language”. While Chinese Mandarin 
and Spanish are the mother tongues of more people overall, most people in the world choose to learn 
some English after their native language. In fact, one in five people on the planet speak or understand 
at least a little bit of English.
Learning legal terms is important for your career if you are studying law regardless of the coun-
try. The main reason behind this is the rise in globalization. Since a lot of people study from one 
country and apply their learned skills by moving to another country, it is important that you should be 
able to communicate well while interacting with others.
The language of the law or the legal language refers to the language of and related to law and 
legal process. It is a type of register, that is, a variety of language appropriate to different occasions 
and situations of use, and in this case, a variety of language appropriate to the legal situations of use.
Since learning both written and spoken legal communication skills is essential to succeed in the 
legal profession, you should give special emphasis to it. You can test your legal language skills your-
self by enrolling in a specific program that caters to lawyers who want to polish their language skills 
in applying legal terminologies.
Learning legal terms along with the concepts of law is the only way you can represent yourself as 
a lawyer. Due to a challenging market for lawyers, it is a necessity for all lawyers.
However, there are some difficulties especially, in the area of law relating to its language. Lin
-
guistic difficulties in legal languages arise from the differences found in the different legal cultures 
and legal systems. Legal language has developed its characteristics to meet the demands of the legal 
system in which it is expressed. 
Legal language is distinguished from other types of technical languages that convey universal 
information. In this sense, legal language is sui generis. Each legal language is the product of a special 
history and culture. One of the main reasons why the language of the law is difficult to understand is 
that it is often very different from ordinary language. 
In legal language writing conventions are different, like: sentences often have peculiar structures, 
punctuation is used insufficiently, foreign phrases are sometimes used instead of ordinary phrases 
(e.g. inter alia instead of among others), unusual pronouns are employed (the same, the aforesaid, 
etc.), unusual set phrases are to be found (null and void, all and sundry), technical vocabulary, unusu-
al and archaic words, impersonal constructions, use of modal like shall, multiple negation, long and 
complex sentences, and poor organization are all problematic.

To conclude, lawyers need to produce emails, texts, and documents that serve the needs of the 
client. These needs include solving existing problems efficiently, foreseeing and forestalling future 
problems, issues, tensions, and uncertainties, which occur in all forms of human social and economic 
transactions. Lawyers who operate internationally, who communicate with clients and other profes-
sionals across different cultures, have a need for both trans-national legal awareness and trans-cultur-
al linguistic awareness. Whatever the nature of the legal writing, whether for correspondence, doc-
uments or courts, legal skills and language skills are a vital part of a lawyer’s professional training. 
Therefore, the English language is really important even in studying for law students and in career 
growth.
