Annotation:
Among all the skills needed to succeed in today’s business market, a strong know-
ledge of English is a must. If you want to improve your communication skills, English will be the ba-
sis of this training. If you want to close a business, convince people, or lead your employees, knowing 
English will be your greatest asset. Also, if you are planning to expand your business to other regions 
of the world, you will know that English will be your most widely used language.
The importance of English in business
English is not the most widely spoken language in the world, but when it comes to business, it is 
the most important. About 1 billion people speak Mandarin, but they are mostly concentrated in Chi-
na. About 400 million people speak Spanish, mostly in Central and South America.
Only 360 million 
people know English as their mother tongue, but when you include those who speak it as a second 
language, their number reaches about 860 million and they spread all over the world.
If you live in an English-speaking country like the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, 
or Australia, your business depends not only on your fluency, but also on your knowledge of English. 
Poor grammar and a poor vocabulary can seriously weaken your influence with clients who are well 
versed in English, and if you are planning to run your business abroad, you will need good English 
at home.
Leaders see strong English as essential to success in business.
In any study or questioning of business leaders, English is always a key factor when asked about 
what they are looking for in the most important skills today.
A survey of 2,000 business leaders conducted by LinkedIn in 2018 found that English-speaking 
companies were the basis of the three leaders they were looking for: leadership, communication and 
collaboration.
In a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 73.4 percent of em-
ployers said they would like candidates with strong written communication skills. While the educa-
tion system is mainly focused on science, technology, engineering and math, 75 per cent of employers 
said that great emphasis should be placed on written communication skills in college.
The importance of English in the world today.
English is the demand for more jobs in more countries than ever before in human history. Even 
20 or 30 years ago, a good command of English was not as important as it is now. In the past, English 
was only required for top management in global companies. Today, companies ’customers and sup-
pliers, their technical support teams, and their management can be spread across multiple countries.
It is difficult to estimate the actual number of multinational companies in the world. One of the 
most recent surveys was completed by EF Education First in 2016, which showed a 25 percent in-
crease in the number of multinational companies over the past 10 years. In 28 non-English-speaking 
countries, 70 percent of companies surveyed said English was important to their business, while 11 
percent said it was the primary language.
The disparity in English language proficiency between industries is declining, with the gap be
-
tween the highest and lowest industries almost halving. Companies spend more money on teaching 
English, adults learn English on their own, and more people can use English in the workplace. Some 
of the best areas, based on English, which are 50 to 60 percent fluent, include:
*mass media
*banking and finance
*agriculture

*travel and tourism
*healthcare

The importance of English for trade and commerce
English is very important today in world trade and commerce, including e-commerce.
Rakuten is a Tokyo-based e-commerce and internet company with a 90% market share in Japan. 
In order for the company to continue to grow, the company had to expand globally, which meant it 
had to master English. The CEO had to give the staff two years to learn English and pass an English 
proficiency test. Those who fail the test will be fired.
Over the next five years, Rakuten increased its user base from 200 million to 1.1 billion. They 
also improved their existing skills. There are only about 20,000 engineers in Japan, and with English, 
the company can now hire English-speaking engineers from other parts of the world. In fact, only 20 
percent of their Tokyo-based engineers are now Japanese.
