The evolutionary process of Internet language: causes and consequences 
It is known that the history of English is divided into three main parts namely Old English, Mid-
dle English and Modern English. Each period has its own peculiarities which make different from 
others. For example, Old English period shows the replacement and derivation of words by Celtic 
language. The immigration of Old Norse speakers and invasion of Normans had effected on shifting 
the language. As well as this period covers the years from 450 to 1100. 
As for as the era of Middle English, there had been tremendous changes in the branches of 
English linguistics. For instance, the dominance of English language was gained in spite of French 
loanwords. The Great Vowel Shift was belonging to this era.
“Contact with the local languages of 
the colonies resulted in further waves of loanwords entering English. New words were also coined 
to meet the changing needs of the country. During this time, numerous commentators called for
standardization.”

Despite the rich features of both period, the article pays more attention to Modern English period 
because the topic is related to it. During this era English language has undergone major transforma-
tions on either vocabulary or grammar. As an example, ,in the eighteenth century, there was an

attempt not only to formulate rules or principles by which correctness could be defined and
achieved but also to seek order, stability, and identity

.
The importance of that period is that there is need for protection of the language from changes. As 
John Dryden cited “We have yet no prosodic, not so much as a tolerable dictionary, or a grammar so 
that our language is manner barbarous; ... I rather fear a declination of the language, than hope
an advancement of it in the present age”

.
Step by step, in the eighteen’s century English language tuned into the language of the world. 
Apart from the area of British Empire and the USA this language spread to many countries as a lan-
guage franca. At that time for many countries English became the assistance of trade, politics, educa-
tion and medicine. There were obstacles in some countries, for example, Japan, Russia, and China 
were initially very restrictive about the use of English but have now opted for using English to 
further their professional, industrial, and commercial advancement in a competitive global market

.However during the World War I and II the demand for English increased twice because of new 
technologies.
Finally, the development of film industry and broadcasting technologies added a new variety to 
English. In my opinion the creation of the Internet in the USA and capacity to cover all the needs of 
this technology made English as the Internet Language.

guage today. Technology has done more than extending our vocabulary; it has changed the way
we use language, communicate and express ourselves.”

After the mass production of personal computers, communication and business became easier 
than before. Also the functions of English appeared in a new style: ESP (English for Specific Pur
-
pose), ESL (English as the second language) and EFL (English as the first language) and so on.
