Born in Leningrad in 1923 in the family of S.G.Barkhudarov, a Soviet linguist, specialist in morphology, syntax and vocabulary of the Russian language. He began his philological education at Leningrad University, but was unable to continue it due to the outbreak of World War II. After the end of the war, he continued his studies at the Moscow Military Institute of Foreign Languages. He defended his Ph.D. thesis, worked as the head of the English language department. Subsequently, he received his Ph.D. in Philology for his dissertation "Problems of the Syntax of a Simple Sentence in Modern English".
Since 1965 - lecturer at the Institute of Foreign Languages. M. Toreza. At various times he was in charge of the Department of Translation, the Department of Grammar. In recent years, he headed the faculty of continuing education for teachers of English. He was the editor-in-chief of the journal Translator's Notebook for a long time. A world-famous scientist, many of whose works have been translated into foreign languages, he is the author of textbooks: "Grammar of the English Language" in collaboration with D.A. Shteling, "Morphology of the English Language", "The Structure of a Simple Sentence in Modern English", " Language and Translation".
Leonid Stepanovich Barkhudarov possessed a truly encyclopedic knowledge not only in the field of philology and linguistics, but also in many other areas and scientific problems. He was distinguished by great sociability, wit, loved a good joke, took great interest in all manifestations of life, was friendly, was fond of poetry and wrote poetry himself.
