parts are coated by conventional and common application methods (see Chapter 5.2).
One particular method is that of in-mould coating. The inside of the mould is sprayed with release 
agent. Then the coating material is applied by spraying or by flow coating. After a pre-drying time, 
the liquid plastic material is injected into the mould and cured. Upon removal from the mould, 
the part is already very well coated. Instead of a coating, the mould may also be lined with film or 
leather. This method is already widely used for interior car parts (see Chapter 4.1).
The final method would be to construct car bodies with the aid of multilayer film systems. For 
example, such a film system would consist of a carrier film, a film containing coloured pigment 
and effect substances (comparable to the basecoat layer of conventional coating methods), and a 
transparent film which confers optimum scratch resistance and meets other resistance require-
ments imposed on coating surfaces (playing the same role as clearcoats). The multilayer film 
system would then be shaped and cured to form body parts.
Some ideas have been proposed that seem a bit utopian. The lotus effect has already been 
described (see Chapter 3.8.3.12). More achievable seems the idea of generating holograms on car 
surfaces; this would be possible where film is used for car bodies. So far, there has been no useful 
solution to the question of creating surfaces that can change colour or effect.
It is anticipated that current application processes and the usage of liquid and sprayable coating 
materials will continue. So far, such materials have been able to meet regulations of reducing 
emissions of volatile organic compounds. Most of all, the use of such materials makes it possible 
to meet the demands and wishes of customers for custom surface designs and appearance that 
will surely become more widespread in the near future.
