of his life, he is the twin brother of Charles Darney’s late father;

both men were exceptionally arrogant and cruel to peasants.

Marquis St. Evremonde’s carriage. He plunges a knife into

Evremonde’s heart, pinning a note that reads, “Drive him so fast to

his tomb,” a reference to his careless speed that caused his little

boy’s death. After hiding for a year, he is found, arrested and

executed.
