Population of animals in India:

India is known for its biological diversity in the world. The 20
th
livestock census the

population of various species of domesticated animals are as follows. Ruminant: Cattle-

per cent since last 2012, 19
th
livestock census. The overall population size was 512.06 million
in 2012 while it rose up to approx. 536 million. It is showing the way for more aggressive
rearing of the domestic animals in the country. The camel population is 0.25 million,

million decreased by 51.9%, Mithun- 3.9 Lakh, increased by 30% , Yak- 58000, decreased
by 24.67 % from 2012 census. In poultry, there is an increase of 16.8 per cent in the poultry
population in the country from nearly 835 to 851.81 million.
There is an increase of 18 per cent in the number of female cattle is from 122.98 to
145.12 million. There is 6 per cent decrease in the total number of indigenous cattle, while
26.9 per cent increase in the population of total exotic/crossbred cattle. The total number of
milch animals (in-milk and dry) in cows and buffaloes is 125.34 million. Among total
livestock population Cattle accounted for 35.94 per cent, goats accounted for 27.80 per cent,
buffaloes: 20.45 per cent, sheep: 13.87 per cent and pigs: 1.69 per cent in the country.
Contribution to national milk pool ( 187.75 million tonnes) by indigenous buffalo –
35%, Non-descriptive buffalo- 14 %, Non descriptive cow – 11%, Indigenous cow 10 % ,
Cross breed cow- 26%, Exotic- 1% and Goat- 3%. In term of egg production 103.32 billion
number increased by 8.5 percent as compared to 2017- 2018.
Meat production – 8.11 million tonnes, increased by 6 % than 2017-18, poultry
contribute 50%, Buffalo 19%, Goat 13.53 %, Pig 4.98 %, Sheep 8.36 % and Cattle 4.02 %.
The livestock sector contributes 22.6% in 2012-13 to 27.4% in 2017-18 at constant
price while at current prices its shares has increased from 22% in 2012-13 to 28.4 % in 2017-
18 to GVA to the agriculture sector .
Here, we can directly observe that, animals which are used maximally, the population
is also increasing simultaneously. So, this report represents the bright future for Animal
Husbandry Sector. Certain scope and development need to be analysed. The animal
husbandry sector has the ability to bloom; just need a little bit in depth study about pros and
cones, problems comes with solution only.
