Activity 3 Benefits of concordances

Objective: to let students reflect on the use of corpus analysis.

Time: 20 minutes

Procedure:

• 
  Ask students now reflect on the tasks and summarise how corpus analysis can be useful.
  
• 
  Establish that corpus analysis is useful to see how words are used in real life contexts, to discover different meanings and uses of common words, useful phrases and typical collocations, analyse usage, for example, when is it appropriate to use lazy rather than idle, compare similar words.
  
• 
  Tell students they can use corpora on their own.
  
• 
  As home assignment ask students to go to http://www.lextutor.ca/ and search for a word of their choice. Then write a short report on what word(s) have they searched, what have they learnt, what they found interesting etc.
