III. Procedure of a new lesson.
Activity 1 Listen and repeat.
Objective: to present formal and informal greetings
Before doing the activity explain the words in the mother tongue if necessary.
Ask PP to listen to the phrases twice and then repeat them.
Culture Notes
Hi is an informal greeting used among friends. The other greetings are formal and are used with strangers and older people except Hello which is used with everyone. There are normally no exclamation marks after greetings or imperatives.
Activity 2 Look and say.
Objective: to practice greetings

  1. Divide the class into two groups: ‘children’ and ‘adults’.

  2. Point to the clocks one after another and let the first group say the correct greeting and the other one respond.

  3. Then ask some individual PP to speak.

  4. Finally ask PP to do the same activity in pairs.

Activity 3 Chain Drill.
Objective: to present and practice introductions
Explain the Chain Drill. Use the mother tongue to demonstrate it.
T: Hi. I’m A. This is B.
B: Hello. I’m B. This is C.
C: Hi. I’m C. This is D. etc. (PP use their own names.)
Check with a short practice. Now tell the PP to begin the drill quickly around the class.
