UNIT 6
Chapter 2
CHAPTER 2
Is "Spontaneous Human
Combustion" Possible?

Read the following sentences. Which ones do you believe?
1 Some people are able to move things using their minds.
2 Some people are able to see or communicate with dead people.
3 Earth is frequently visited by beings from other worlds.
4 If you talk to your plants and play soft music for them, they will grow faster.
5 Ancient civilizations have been able to predict things that happen many
years in the future.

Discuss
your answers in

with a partner, then answer the following
questions.
1 Can you think of any unusual events that have happened in your country
or around the world?
2 Do you think there are some things that science cannot explain? Why, or
why not?

Read the
following sentences from the passage on the next page. Then
answer the questions about the words in bold.
This
scene describes a typical case of spontaneous human combustion
(SHC), in which a human body is supposedly able to burst into
flames and to burn to almost nothing entirely on its own-that
is, without an external cause. In most SHC cases, there are no
witnesses to see how the person caught fire. In rare cases, the
observer, who is often a friend or family member, tries to put out the
fire. Occasionally the victim survives. Again, there is no clear outside
cause-the blaze appears to start from within the victim's own body.
1 The word
spontaneous
is a(n) (verb

noun

adjective).
2 In this sentence
spontaneous
probably means--·
a accidental b forced
c self-generated
3 The word
combustion
is a(n) (verb

noun

adjective)
4 In this sentence,

Underline
the sentences in the paragraph that helped you find the

Then discuss your answers with a partner.

Now
read the entire passage carefully. Then answer the questions on

It happens something like this. Someone
finds a badly burnt body in

poorly
