8th semester theme: Ways of expressing agreement and disagreement in speaking classes

Everyday conversations are full of ideas that we agree or disagree with. Imagine yourself speaking with someone and said: “education is not really important and going to school is just a waste of time”. You will probably agree or disagree with the statement. This is what we call agreement and disagreement.

What is an agreement and disagreement?

• Agreement is when people have and share the same opinion and feelings.

• Disagreement is when people have different opinions about something and often argue.

In English, there are many expressions we can use to express both agreement and disagreement.

Agreement, partial agreement and disagreement

The way people agree or disagree in an argument or discussion varies in different languages.

Agreement:

An agreement is a manifestation of mutal assent by two or more persons to one another.

It is a meeting of the mind in a common intention, and is made through offer and acceptance . An agreement can be shown from words, conduct, and in some cases, even silence.

Agreements are often associated with contracts; however, "agreement" generally has a wider meaning than "contract," "bargain," or "promise. " A contract is a form of an agreement that requires additional elements, such as consideration

It is worthwhile saying that silence is not understood as agreement. If you agree with an opinion or an idea, you are expected to say so.

Expressions used to agree

There is no doubt about it that...

I completely / absolutely agree with you.

I agree with you entirely.

I totally agree with you.

I simply must agree with that.

I am of the same opinion.

I am of the same opinion.

That’s exactly what I think.

Disagreement:

Expressing disagreement is always respected as honest, and sometimes as courageous.
