A Mosque in Karachi, Pakistan,
an Architect and Several Identities
This article aims to discuss the factors which form the identity of a
building, through a mosque built in the second half of 1960’s in Karachi,
Pakistan. Masjid-e Tooba was designed by Babar Hameed Chauhan and
built between 1966 – 1969 and it has different meanings beyond being a
mere temple. It is the biggest mosque in Karachi, out of city centre and
it was built by using the modern architectural language in İslamic
Republic of Pakistan. Although Islamabad was being built when Masjid-e
Tooba’ construction was started, Karachi was still the capital and the
biggest city in Pakistan. It was the time of building up the national
identity; that meant it was searched where to stand between the tradition
and modernity both in social life and in architecture. In this context, it is
aimed to find out how this mosque was affected by these discussions.
The factors which formed this mosque in modern style were explicated
in a wide perspective: from the formation of its architect to patronage;
from the history of Karachi and Pakistan to the political background.
