A Reconstruction Story: Basak Insurance Building
Başak Insurance Building is located on the corner of a parcel, opposite
the Harbiye Military Museum. The project of this building was obtained in
1963 by the company management with an invited competition, in the
form of receiving proposals.
Architects Asım Mutlu, Utarit İzgi, Esad Suher started to work together in the
M6 Architects Group and between 1959 and 1961, also Yılmaz Zenger, Ünal
Demiraslan and Zühtü Müridoğlu were involved in that group. They
restructured the group in 1961 and continued to work under the “M3
Urbanism Architecture and Construction Workshop” until 1975. Among the
important works of M3 group are Adnan Kunt House (1964) in Pendik,
Harbiye Başak Insurance Building (1965), Nişantaşı 3MİM Apartment (1966),
Baltalimanı Paşa Tatar House (1966) and Seyfettin Aydemir House (1966) in
Kalamış. The common feature of the architects that constitute the group was
that they were teachers in GSA (MSGSÜ) Department of Architecture. The
Office, which was established during the E. Egli period of the Academy,
continues the Practice Office culture and was structured in the walls of the
school, operating in a system where the academicians in their own rooms /
workshops as bureaus, allowing the students to work in the projects.
Başak Insurance Building is one of the multi-storey office buildings
designed by the architects with the interior and equipment of the building
and the materials and details related to the new and progressive
construction technology of the era of its construction. The building can
be evaluated between construction technology solutions and progressive
examples of Turkish architecture in technology context. The curtain wall
application was a product of an entirely domestic planning and
production work which was also the first original example in our country.
The building, constructed as concrete structure was left without plaster
after applying white cement, also used in other constructions by the
architects of the same period, on the exterior surface. The facade is
detailed as aluminum curtain wall, the parapet areas are resolved with
natural stone (diabase) on the front and side facades and artificial stone
plate on the back facade.
Plastic arts have an important place in the works of the M3 Group and an
especially in the buildings that Utarit İzgi designs as an architect. The architects
are in the teaching staff of the Academy of Fine Arts, so they have close
relationships with the artists and therefore have an influence on their place in
the works of art. There is a large ceramic wall that is placed on the entrance hall
of the building which was signed by the pioneer of contemporary ceramic art
and Turkey’s first female ceramic artist Füreya Koral.
The building has begun to lose its lean and qualified architectural features
over time, especially due to the changes in the office technology that has
evolved since the 1980s, and the intensity of the usage program. In the
meantime, with a large-scale intervention, the facade, which determines
the identity of the building, begins to be covered with an aluminum
composite panel. This intervention also constitutes the beginning of the
building’s legal protection story.
The building, which is registered as a cultural asset in order to protect the
city and country architecture with its detail and spatial features in terms
of culture and memory, is one of the first examples exhibiting the
technological development of Turkish architecture by the related
conservation council. The building has been demolished because
depending of timely earthquake regulations. After that a hotel was
constructed the place of building. This short article aims to evaluate the
new construction, which is designed and built as a hotel in the direction
of the decision of the conservation council, in the context of protection.
