OTTAWA 
The capital of Canada is Ottawa. Ottawa is a modern & beautiful city. It lies on gently rolling 
hills along the south bank of the Ottawa River, about 120 miles (193 kilometers) west Montreal. 
Attractive parks, stately government buildings and sunk drives add beauty to the city. 
Ottawa faces the city of Mull, Queen across the Ottawa River. Parliament Hill the site of 
Canada's Parliament buildings borders the Ottawa River and otters a dramatic view of the heart 
of Ottawa. It has wooded slopes and beautiful lawns. The Peace Tower a memorial rises 292 fut.

In 1826, British troops founded the first settlement in the area that's now Ottawa. The 
town that sprang up around the construction site became known as Bay town, Ottawa was a 
small lumbering town when Queer-Victoria choose it in 1857 to be .the capital of the United 
Province of Canada. The nonunion of Canada was established in 1867. with Ottawa as its capital. 
The city's layout has been greatly changed through the years in keeping with Ottawa's
standing as a national capital. 
Other important cities are Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Hamilton, 
Winnipeg and Quebec. Canada's largest ports are Vancouver, Montreal and Halifax. 
Population. 
The population of Canada is more than 30 million people. Five hundred fifty thousand 
Indians and 36,000 Eskimos live in Canada, mostly in the North. Today more than 45 percent of 
the people of Canada are of British ancestry, about 30 percent of French ancestry and the rest are 
from other backgrounds. There is a large French-speaking population in the province of Quebec. 
Other large ethnic groups are German, Irish and. Scottish people. Native people American 
Indians and Eskimos make up about 2% the country's population. 77% of Canada's people live in 
cities or towns Toronto and Montreal are the largest urban areas. 
Canada is an independent federal democracy and a member of the Commonwealth of 
Nations. Formally, the head of state is the king or queen of Eng-land, represented by a governor 
general.
Canada consists often provinces and two territories. Each province has its own 
government. The federal parliament consists of the Senate, whose members are appointed by the 
governor ge-neral, and the House of Commons, elected by the people for a period of five years.
