Land Beneath Our Feet
Science and Natural History Exhibit
from the South Florida Museum, Bradenton
December 19, 2008 - June 13, 2009
Daytona Beach, FL - Florida’s ancient history comes alive in Land Beneath Our Feet opening December 19th through June 13th, 2009 at the Daytona Beach Museum of Arts & Sciences. On loan from the South Florida Museum in Bradenton; Land Beneath Our Feet explores the fascinating and unique geological history of Florida. Beginning millions of years ago when Florida was formed to current environmental issues, the exhibit provides an excellent base for study of rocks and minerals, fossils, and water that will be utilized by students, independent learners and families looking for an educational adventure.
The exhibit, in the Center for Florida History Gallery at the museum, will include the geologic history of the development of Florida through a look at tectonic plate theory timeline, graphics, and deep earth core samples. Fossils will be explored featuring the mammoth remains found in west Bradenton in 2005. Fossil shells and other specimens from the extensive collection of the South Florida Museum will illustrate the diversity and importance of South Florida during the ice age. Earth systems, environmental changes and ecosystems stemming from the geology of our region will be explained through colorful graphics. Sand, limestone, phosphates and even oil, all play an important role in the geology & economy of Florida. Learn why these elements are so important. Educational programming and fun activities are planned for the summer months.

Planetarium and laser shows daily. Museum Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Monday - Saturday) and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Sunday). Museum admission is $12.95 for adults; $6.95 Children 6-17; $10.95 for seniors and students; members and children 5 and under are free. Admission includes planetarium. Parking is free.
