Question 29 Summary:

  • Yes, but not at the expense of the neighborhood improvements (5 responses)

  • No (1 response)

Other responses not responsive to the question.

Question #30: Should developers of new commercial projects be required to make financial contributions to a fund for traffic calming and pedestrian safety projects in the neighborhood?

Even as a citizen, I would be willing to pay in order to be able to walk my kids to the bus stop!

But not restricted to just these projects.

And parking. Major mistakes have been made in Clarendon re parking that will eventually cause its demise.

& parking

It should be in their development plan if they impact such.

Why just new developers? What about existing merchants?

Question 30 Summary:

  • Yes to sidewalks and parking (4 responses)

  • Other responses do not directly address the question.

  1. Neighborhood/Historic Preservation

(no open-ended questions)
. . . Please indicate the degree to which the following have impacted you or are of concern to you:

Question # 31: Impact on Privacy
Proximity of homes

Very ugly houses being built, but also many tasteful additions.

Question 31 Summary: No meaningful conclusion to draw.

Question #32: Changing character of neighborhood

The new, huge houses look AWFUL and do not fit in the neighborhood. I know some size restrictions were put in place but I don't see any difference. THEY LOOK AWFUL!!! McMansions!

Too many monster houses taking up land.

Question 32 Summary: Too large of houses on small lots.

Question # 33: Parking / traffic issues

During construction

especially Lee Highway

Speeding

Question 33 Summary: Not enough responses to summarize.

Question #34: Loss of trees and natural landscape
The new, huge houses look AWFUL and do not fit in the neighborhood. I know some size restrictions were put in place but I don't see any difference. THEY LOOK AWFUL!!! McMansions!
Question 34 Summary:

  • Too large of houses on small lots (1 response).

  • Not enough responses to summarize.

Question # 36: Quality of life

Big concern, but it's good

Has improved

Question 36 Summary:

Not enough responses to summarize.

Question #37: Loss of diversity in our neighborhoods
Never was diverse
Question #38: Affordability
In what way? Housing? Property? Other living expenses? If housing, my concern is that the neighborhood is becoming (has already!) economically homogenous & we don't like that

  1. Urban Forestry

(no open-ended questions)
Question # 39: Water Runoff / Soil Erosion
Happening to my house right now - construction leaving dirt pile for up to 5 tons (?couldn't read writing). On 26th St (Lee Hwy side) at least 3 houses, including mine, are suffering increased water runoff problems because of immediate past - and current new construction next to 5824 N 26th
Question 39 Summary:

  • 1 response with water runoff problem

  • Not enough responses to draw conclusion

Question #40: In general should trees be planted on our streets whenever adequate tree-planting space exists or can be created within the public right-of-way?

Some is okay but not everywhere. Its expensive to maintain and makes no sense to plant trees that when mature will have to be pruned around electric transmission lines - it ruins the look of the tree and can be dangerous.

No so they become a problem for sight lines of traffic or destroy pavements as they grow

This is a relatively easy way to dramatically improve a neighborhood.

Question 40 Summary: No consensus of response
Question 41: Do you favor a program that provides incentives for businesses to plant trees and add other landscaping?

I would be satisfied if they would pick up trash.

Incentives.

Question 41 Summary:

  • Not enough responses to draw conclusion

Question # 42: Do you favor requirements for developers to replace the tree canopy that is destroyed with development projects?

Within reason and if space permits.

Unlikely to be able to - but we must do something - I prefer to limit the removal of the tree canopy, significantly

This should not even be a question!

Especially alley at CVS/etc. They are always cutting down yet never replacing.

Yes - developers cut down trees because it is easy to do. If they knew they had to replace them, they would cut down fewer.

Question 42 Summary:

  • Replace canopy (4 responses)

  • Ambivalence (1 response)

  1. Your Comments

1. Make it a goal to make the Lee Hwy/Overlee area the most pedestrian friendly area in Arlington
2. Encourage use of rain gardens (strategic plantings that absorb runoff) to mitigate soil erosion and prevent harmful runoff. Work with County experts to get neighborhood how-to info. Get list of native plants from County experts and make it public.

Have a concrete plan 5, 10, 15, 20 years out. Instead of focusing so much on tax based revenue, think of people's quality of life, school capacity, and be realistic and gluttonous.

6015 N 22nd Road, our street needs to be resurfaced
18. Trash and leaves are not cleaned up enough
Consider sewer ½ block due to large water runoff from houses (22nd rd. backyards flow into 23rd street backyards. Also, street angles south—north side is OK.

No more road humps, give speed fines

A 4-way stop, or traffic speed humps, is desperately needed. Speeding is an everyday problem on Harrison & there are numerous accidents every year & increasing.

Arlington was rated recently as America's most pedestrian friendly neighborhood. I am proud of that, but crosswalks are a death-brushing joke. Can't we improve them? Also, I would strongly support commercial development along lee hwy that mirrors the Clarendon corridor. Retain and refurbish some existing buildings and mix in new construction. We need more trees!

Avoid over bright lights in new/renovated commercial areas

Cars that are parked on the wrong side of the street, facing oncoming traffic. This is against the law in Arlington but there is little enforcement. I have seen this several times on Lexington near the Library and on other streets.
I would like to L/O Civic Association to write a letter to the Arlington County P/D requesting that illegal parking be policed.

Curbs on N. 22nd St east of Lexington St should be a high priority. Few streets in this neighborhood lack curbs - this is not in keeping with the look of the area. Please push for the installation of curbs!

Greater vigilance on rat control.
County assistance for removal of dangerous trees.
Arborist help to homeowners to test for sick trees on private land.

I find that too many residents are cutting down trees because they consider trees a nuisance. They should be educated about the benefits of those trees or encouraged to replant. I also think this area needs more green space, to make areas that are safer & easier to bike & walk in.
Increase affordable housing & diversity.

I think I have made it clear that I think speeding is a problem.

I think reminders should be disseminated to homeowners to make sure they maintain their yards and homes. Some homes appear to not be kept up properly.

I think there is an opportunity to improve the appearance & character of this area. I think the community should support this.

I thought there already is one?; lived in Arlington off and on for 20 years

I would like to see more pet owners pick up after their pets. Also, not dumping brush under the sign that says no brush.

Instituting an architectural review committee to approve the structural designs of neighborhood renovations building - many expansion efforts lack character and do not fit the character.

Lee Center is the stepchild of the area. Need expanded parking, better playground equipment.
Less building of houses not in scale with existing houses.

Lee Center playfields need better maintenance or complete upgrading. Keep the Westover library project on track. Get the funding for Lee Center site improvements.

Need left turn signal @lights @Lee Hwy-George Mason & Lee Hwy & Harrison - ALL 4 directions need these turn lights

New homes should have to retain the trees on their property - or plant the same number or more of new tress in a different location on their property

Nice to have post office, library, grocery store, and CVS in walking distance. Hope we don't lose any of these due to new expansion of commercial area along Lee Hwy and our neighborhood in general

No more speed bumps! Proposed changes to 22nd street / Powahatan/ Potomac intersection not important to us. Would rather see dollars spent on more sidewalks.

Not enough parking space at Lee Center.
There should be more police to hand out tickets to speeders in neighborhood.

PLEASE ADD MORE SIDEWALKS TO KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE! And please add more trees on 24th St. to provide more shade. PLEASE PUT POWER LINES UNDER GROUND!

Please enforce rules of building new houses. New designs often do not fit neighborhood profile - suddenly huge houses go up or houses with a modern design which is not typical for the neighborhood.

please install a sidewalk so that children can walk safely to the bus stop located at N. Illinois and 22nd st. Currently, there is no sidewalk and it is dangerous for small children to walk to the stop. Traffic on Illinois is often to fast and it is used as a thoroughfare between Lee Hwy and Patrick Henry and adjoining streets.

primarily concerned with traffic on N. Harrison st.

Simple: sidewalks in all streets; enforce speed limits and stop signs; encourage diversity and proper canopy coverage

Don't think this your problem but County board "sold out" height of new construction

22nd Rd North is a throwback road. It lacks consistent width; it is not even/level, it is falling apart; it has little curbs/gutter treatment; it has no sidewalks which limits neighbor interaction. I think this street is screaming for top priority in the neighborhood conservation plan.

1. The county is too militant about trees. Common sense should be used and they should understand and endorse compromise with individual homeowners as they do with developers.
2. Understand how the County allocates and spends money on capital improvements. I see new curds, sidewalks, public areas in all parts of the county except ours.

More trees, less graffiti, sidewalk to Overlee Pool

The "McMansioning" of our neighborhood is concerning - the new homes dwarf all the others & take away green space. Also, these large homes greatly diminish the view from other homes - create artificial shade f/ other houses & the view diminishes from grass/lawn/trees to the size of the neighbors 3,000-sf home.

Our neighborhood does not qualify for bus service to Yorktown H.S. The crossing area at Lee/Harrison does not provide any pedestrian support. There should be more police presence in the commercial area rather than further west on Lee Highway where few people cross Lee Highway. Signage should change, cross-walk timing improved, angles of cross paths straightened, and more aggressive police presence would help make the area safer for pedestrians and even speed-limit-driving vehicles.
Thank you!

School buses (loud and outdated) cutting through 22nd St at excessive speed. Commercial vehicles doing the same. Cars speeding through 5000 block of 22nd St

Get moving - balance needs of tomorrow with reality.

Definitely more trees.
New homes putting telephone poles on their property instead of cables underground.

Watch the development of the property owned by the WAVA radio tower. Single family homes are fine.
Elementary school boundaries - closing Reed was a bad idea - now our children cross major street to go to Tuckahoe - why don't our children go to Nottingham?

Smaller houses on bigger lots. No more McMansions!

As above, many Lee Highway businesses do a poor job at snow removal.
Could we encourage a car-share (Zipcar/Flexcar) in the Lee Harrison area?

Many of the new homes being built appear to be bigger than zoning laws allow; i.e., the ugly monstrosity that appears to be castle-like at 24th & Kensington

NW corner of Nottingham & 23 St is about to be transformed ny Sagatov (sp?) Builders - great trees are coming down. Today is beautiful - 2 months from now? Huge holes - few or no tress - then monster homes. (Note SW corner of Quantico & Wash Blvd - same builders. ??? {can't read writing} & 22 RD - our modest street slowly houses coming down - huge holes dug - another big one going up

Removal of curbside tress that are inappropriate or are not in good shape or health - with replacement of appropriate size & type

More lighting.
Sidewalks for pedestrians.
More trees & other landscaping additions.
Less property taxes.

Please put safety on our streets as a primary concern in the update and in ranking projects.

Some speed bumps are okay. However, Arlington, appears to be adding too many - at what I am told is $20,000 a piece. I would rather have cameras track the speeders.

Very ugly houses being built, but also many tasteful additions.
More/expanded pool club access. The Overlee Pool is basically inaccessible to anyone new. It would be nice to use public space for that.

Median strip with trees down John Marshall Drive to narrow street. I would love to see more lighting on N. 26th Street & the corner of Lexington St & N 27th St. Also, it would be very good to put in sidewalk down from Lexington St down 26th Street. We often walk up N 26th St from our home on the 2600 block of Nottingham and there is no sidewalk up 26th Street toward the Lee-Harrison shops. It's dangerous for pedestrians. From a historic preservation view, I'd like to see more of the older homes in the neighborhood be restored instead of being tear-downs. Having grown up in Arlington & having recently returned to the area, I do not find the building of "McMansions" to be in line w/ Arlington's new "green initiative" and a disturbing new trend.

Developers building houses too large for lots and with no regard for neighborhood, neighbors, and little or no Arlington County policing/regulation. An example is Suburban Builders (John Caranik)
Tree planting on the apartment building property (garden apartment building on Lee Hwy next to Westover Service Station and chiropractor). Over the years, all of the trees along the perimeter and along the property line of several neighbors have died. Owner agreed to replace them but they never have.

Residents/Builders who cut down "large" trees (over a specified height/coverage area) should (1) have to gain permission from County & (2) replace/pay for replacing destroyed trees on their property or elsewhere in the County if their property no longer has appropriate space for a replacement tree.

Dog owners are increasingly lax about cleaning up after their dogs.

Make more pedestrian- and bike-friendly.

Enforce code violations (trash not in proper containers) put out before pickup, lawns not being maintained, overnight parking of trucks, noise and trash from gas stations.
Trim tress & tree limbs that are hanging down on electric wires. Also some of the trees are old and sick & need trimming desperately before coming down on houses & causing major damage.

Please emphasize all aspects of pedestrian safety and making neighborhood more walkable. Completion of sidewalks, curbs & gutters & traffic enforcement on Lee Highway

- Sidewalks throughout the neighborhood are a MUST especially on Madison St & Nottingham. This is huge safety factor. Also, the amount of traffic/cut thru and speeding cars is getting worse.
- Need a common play area for the children. They are currently playing in the STREET! Very unsafe
- The number of tear-downs is increasing and the homes being built are WAY TOO BIG for the lots. They are also out of character for our neighborhood. In my opinion, Nottingham St has been ruined.
- Currently, not a kid friendly neighborhood. No parks, meetings areas, no coordinated events, etc.

Aesthetics. Developers are building large, UGLY houses with prominent street-facing garages. Houses are way too big and fill too much of lots.
At the end: I would like to see a pedestrian overpass at John Marshall and Lee Hwy to facilitate kids' ability to safely cross Lee Hwy to use Overlee Pool. If that is too expensive, what about a light with a button that pedestrians can push to cross? It would only operate when pressed and could not be pressed more often than the light at Lexington.

No more McMansions! Arlington needs to put a limit on the height and size of homes and the % of property consumed by these homes.

Regarding question 40, rights of way should not be made larger merely to accommodate trees, however.

Relax restricted parking in areas near the Metro station.

The County should re-evaluate its older trees plantings & consider removing dead, decayed and dying tress to prevent possible property damage in storms.

The increased number of speed bumps have not provided traffic calming, just a headache, to those who use the streets. Most SUVs are not even remotely affected by the bumps and one could argue that speeds have increased.

Underground power lines makes neighborhoods more attractive, no competition with canopy trees, less impact due to storm damage. NARROW STREETS!!!!!!; 18: Grounds at Lee Center are rocky; 22: Almost never see police unless on Lee Hwy speed trap; 40: As long as coordinate with power lines
