Question 15 Summary:
Major concerns identified:

    • Lack of sidewalks (27 responses)

    • Lack of safe crossing of Lee Hwy and other streets (9 responses)

Question # 16: Please rank how often you use each of the two public spaces within our neighborhood in good weather: Greenway strip . . . ; Lee Recreation and Visual Arts Center; Lee Center grounds (outside facilities):

They are useless for active adults!

Walking only - very good

7x/month

16a. Good for dog walking but not really a park.

16a. 4-5 times a week

What about the circular park that runs behind Madison, Lexington. That is a great space.

Question 16 Summary: Insufficient responses to draw meaningful conclusions.

  1. Public Facilities and Services

For the public spaces in our conservation area that you use, please evaluate how they meet your needs:
V.17. Greenway from Lee Highway to Washington Blvd.

Comments:

A great public park location.

(Adequate Facilities) trash

"Adequate Facilities" There are none of the above, but this is not a problem.

Too far from NE homes

"Adequate Tree Coverage" More trees are needed between 22nd St & 22nd Rd.

There should be sidewalks on the east side of John Marshall between 22nd Rd & Lee. Many people use that side of the street to walk to the pool.

Don't use it enough to know - too far to walk to

Greenway could become a major asset with investment by county.

More shade needed. New shade trees are scarred by weedwhackers, shortening life.

Mowers damage tree trunks.

One of us is handicapped and we haven't used this area in years

Please plant more cherry trees

What would one do there? It's too narrow for much more than dog walking and the yard sale. It's nicely kept but I think it mainly benefits the people who live along it.

Not near me, plus it is just a strip of land. I do not see any reason to go there.

Playground would be beneficial

County grounds maintenance consistently trim (weed-whack) the bark of the new trees too closely - cutting into the bark! This kills the trees by hindering the tree's ability to absorb water. The trees are showing strain - especially during late summer heat. So far, 3 trees died & had to be replaced… & even now, the current ones are showing evidence of distress!

This is mainly an area for walking & serves this purpose well.

This is nothing but marshland really. The drainage is terrible for mosquito breeding.

Entrances in both directions off of 22nd St N need posts to block cars from trail

We have young children walking to bus stop with NO sidewalks and cars going way too fast. Also, no 4-way stop at Madison & 22nd is dangerous!

{Adequate Size} near street. {Adequate Open Space} near street. {Adequate Access} often blocked or falling apart

Once or twice per day - great for dog walking

Question 17 Summary:

  • Better tree planting and care is suggested (5 responses)

V.18. Lee Center and Grounds

Comments:

Parking is a problem; graffiti on the picnic table

(Adequate Maintenance) Grass needs reseeding

The school adjacent to the park uses the grounds a lot, the grass suffers as a result. It is now a rock bed.

Always being used - school, games, etc.

More shade trees needed. Picnic table.

Trash pickup needs improve.

Parking inadequate at Lee Center

Adequate Maintenance unsure

Dirt area is too rocky. High use by Rivendell without apparent maintenance

Fences are in disrepair

Field not maintained

Great space, needs renovation, capital improvements.

Grounds are a mess. Rivendell School should not be allowed to use, no take over, grounds as they do daily. They should pay for upkeep as they are the primary users.

Grounds look run down; playground should be updated. Cleaner sand box.

I would like to see a teen center in North Arlington

Lee Center grounds are lousy, especially the ball field. Would be nice to have "screening" plantings along Lexington side of Lee Center parking lot. And, thereto, how about a "$50.00 Fine" sign for folks bringing dogs onto the Lee Center grounds.

More playground equipment would be great! Also, the field is often very muddy. It would be nice if there was more grass and less mud/dirt (other than the infield of the T-ball field)

My toddler loves this place.

Parking is NOT adequate! Patrons often park illegally for convenience sake. Lighting could be improved. Gate at far end of field was/is broken despite countless calls to County.

The grounds are an embarrassment and a disgrace. The baseball field have rocks/pebbles all over it, no drainage, and is unkempt. The outfield area has a huge stone sticking up out of the ground, which is unsafe. The SE gate doesn't close, which is unsafe. The area next to the basketball court where there is seating is trashy.

This property has lost numerous large trees in the last 10-15 years. No new plantings have been done to replace the lost trees.

A shade pavilion and better tot-lot would be much appreciated. The conservation area is in a baby boom - there are small children everywhere as these neighborhoods have "turned over" during the past ten years and there are tons of kids who use the center and grounds but they are much less shaded than other Arlington tot-lots.

Adequate Access: What can they do with an old stairway - high school?

The Lee Center is super for its specific uses (meetings, classes, etc.) but there really isn't any draw for me. The grounds are basically a playground for Rivendell and kids' sport events. Nothing much for me there either.

Could use a new fence, better grounds care

Lee Center needs more parking and the private school shouldn't be using County property without compensating the County. Better upkeep of fields/grass.

The playground equipment should be upgraded.

The outside grounds are often used by the private school. These kids are too old for the equipment and make it impossible for younger kids to use the equip. When the school kids are using the field and playground equip.

Trash is often full and attracts bees

Sand box is good, but toys are for preschool use only - not very community like

Question 18 Summary:
Issues identified:

  • Inadequate of poor care of fields and other park grounds (10 responses)

  • Lack of parking (3 responses)

  • Unsightly trash (2 responses)

  • More shade required (2 responses)

V.19. Are there any parcels of public land in our neighborhood conservation district that could benefit from beautification?

If yes, where?

1. Back CVS/Blockbuster/Auto arts - overflow of trash
2. 22nd St & Kensington - owner has several undeveloped lots. Make offer to buy and develop as a park

Alley behind CVS and Blockbuster. This is used for heavy pedestrian traffic

Area on Illinois behind Pure gas station.

Behind "Pure" gas station. Very much an eyesore

Better access to 'grass alley' between N. Madison and N. Lexington.

Comment: Please do not give attention to beautification! With scarce $, there are safety concerns on our streets involving young children that are desperately needed first.

Corner of 26th and Nottingham

Fenced area around tower on 22nd & Harrison

Greenway, Lee Center needs new playground equipment

Lee Center Grounds

Lee Center lot

Lee Center, Reed School/Library grounds

Lee Ctr. and grounds

Madison Street/Lee Highway - Hair salon could need some beautification to fit the neighborhood

More tree planting along curbs.

PLEASE improve the Lee Center park. Rivendell students use this park frequently--perhaps overuse park.

Pure Gas Station Lee and Illinois

Reed School parcel

The grass along the greenway between 22nd Street & 21st Street is often used for football games by middle schoolers after school. The grass is very worn & the dirt patches are growing.

The lot behind the Pure station would make a great urban farm/garden or sitting garden.

The park located between Madison & Lexington, 22nd street & 19th street (Horshoe Park) It could use updated playground equipment and mulching. Grounds of the Lee Center could use beautification through landscaping.

undeveloped stretch of N. Nottingham between 25th and 25th

Westover Library land could benefit from beautification. Merilee should have been a recreational park before development. Greenway is not public enough. It appears to be for the favored few residents.

Yes move forward with the butterfly garden in Lee Center.

Yes, the two small adjacent parks west of Lexington Street, and north and south of 20th Road

Question 19 Summary:
Land that would benefit from beautification:

  • Lee Center (15 responses)

  • Pure Gas station (4 responses)

  • CVS/Blockbuster (2 responses)

  • Greenway (2 responses)

  • Horseshoe Park (2 responses)

Question # 20: Should the County consider purchasing privately owned land for use at “tot-lots” parkland and other recreation needs?

Tot-lots, enough already.

There's a huge tot lot on Harrison - even if not in this area

Along/adjacent to Greenway would be ideal

Better awareness & use of Horseshoe Park

While there aren't any in the conservation area, there are plenty around

If the location would not otherwise be appropriate for development, or its location would be very convenient.

No dog lots

I frequently see children playing in the streets. Availability of small lots would provide safer places to play.

How about Adult lots, too?

My toddler loved Lee Center playground when he was small.

Better to purchase it for affordable housing. There are plenty of tot lots.

Yes! There are lots of kids in this neighborhood that do not know each other because there is no common meeting ground - many kids are forced to play in the STREET because lack of play ground

There is enough currently.

Open areas for trees and flowers and benches

Question 20 Summary:

  • There are enough tot lots already (6 responses)

  • No strong opinion for more tot lots.

V.21. Do you think that crime is a problem in the Leeway Overlee area?

If yes, please describe:

Not current crime, but potential crime. I have never seen a police patrol in our neighborhood. I inquired and was told that only one policeman was assigned to North Arlington. I frequent Clarendon and there are always too many police there.

Except for some already known households

Recently with the increase in building/tear-downs, there seems to be an increase in break-ins

2223 North Lexington Street has police cars constantly

Aside from car break-ins, we've not experienced any problems

Car and home break ins

Crime is always a problem everywhere

don't know because I've only lived here 6 months

gang graffiti - only problem

Gang Signatures

graffiti

Graffiti

Graffiti

I have had some tampering/burglary/vandalism to my, and others, vehicles

Lots of car break-ins along Illinois St right outside the Leeway Overlee area.

Lots of teenagers wandering late at night

Minor litter and graffiti

Our garage was recently burgled. There is a constant flow of traffic in & out of Overlee Pool parking lot - even when pool is not in season

Perhaps - recently had superglue put in lock

Problem family at 22nd & Lexington

Problem with theft in the neighborhood

Recent reports of tires slashed and break-ins.

Speeding

Sporadic vandalism

wayward teenagers sometimes

Vandalism on rare occasions by resident teenagers

Question 21 Summary:
Crime problems:

    • Break-ins (7 responses)

    • Graffiti (6 responses)

    • Vandalism (3 responses)

Question # 22: Is there a sufficient police presence in your neighborhood?

There are NONE; which is why people don't hesitate to speed or roll through stop signs.

Lived here three years - never seen police on patrol.

I've never seen police here, but don't feel we need more.

Our two police who lived across the street recently retired

Rarely see police presence

Never seen any driving around

No presence I am aware of but crime is not an issue to me.

No - none - never, ever see them. Sometimes I see a police car SPEEDING down our street, but none just to patrol.

Question 22 Summary of 8 responses:

Question # 23: Please rank how safe you feel when walking in our neighborhood streets at night:

It's not our neighbors that are the problem, it's the speeders down Nottingham.

Traffic (not an issue with crime)

Stupid drivers!

I don't make a habit of walking after dark

Don't walk due to poor lighting

I would NEVER do this - not safe. Not enough police present

Question 23 Summary:

  • Cars are the problem (3 responses)

  • Poor lighting (1 response)

  • Lack of police presence (1 response)

Question # 24: Please rank your satisfaction with the following Arlington County services:

Tired of them throwing & breaking recycling bins

Library. Now that new library has been approved.

Include more.

We {heart} our library

24b. Needs expansion

24h. But could be, should be upgraded.

24 f. and g. Will need both services soon

24d. Preschool
