Teaching a language has not been an easy but responsible and honorary
profession..One.passes.through.knowledge.on.a.language.which.can.open.the.doors.of.the.
world..We.can.see.a.lot.of.approaches.on.teaching.languages,.especially.English..With.the.
help.of.those.approaches.and.techniques.as.well.teaching.English.can.be.more.efficient.among.
schoolchildren..Paying.more.attention.to.the.pronunciation.of.the.words,.grammar.rules,.doing.
more.speaking.and.listening.are.becoming.common.in.the.English.lessons.day.by.day..Those.
above.mentioned.methods.are.connected.to.the.vocabulary..Boosting.vocabulary.in.not.only.
English but also in all foreign languages is vital because vocabulary development can lead to
other.destinations.in.a.language.easily..The.current.trend.of.L2.vocabulary.instruction.focuses.
on.its.natural.occurring.discourse.and.stresses.that.words.should.be.always.taught.and.learnt.
in.contexts.[Nattinger,.1988;.Brown,.1994;.Aebersold.&.Field,.1997;.Nation,.2008]..With.the.
assistance.of.computer,.it.is.now.possible.to.record.how.words.are.actually.used.in.English..
As far as effective vocabulary teaching is concerned, some valuable recommendations can be
given.to.improve.teaching.vocabulary..There.is.a.new.style.of.working.with.new.words:
1.. Convey;
2.. Check;
3.. Consolidate
4.. Connect;
They.are.called.“4.C‘s”.in.teaching.unknown.words..[1;.5]
Now.we.will.try.to.identify.what.each.“C“.means..
1.. Convey. –. is. making. (an. idea,. impression. or. a. feeling). understandable. and. which.
means. while. learning. a. new. word. having. the. correct. sense. of. words. is. crucial.. Normal.
English.sentence.structure.can.be.one.of.the.hints.of.getting.the.meaning.of.a.new.word.more.
understandable as this language has its strict rules of sentence structure and so according to
the.place.the.words.are.coming.we.can.see.whether.this.new.word.is.coming.with.its.noun.
meaning.or.verb;.adjective.or.adverb..
It.is.possible.to.take.the.word.“book”.as.an.example:
1.. There.is.a.new.but.a.bit.expensive.book.on.the.table.
2.. Mr..Watson.booked.a.return.ticket.for.next.week.
Though.both.sentences.above.have.the.word.“book”,.they.are.bot.in.the.same.meaning..In.
the.first.sentence.learners.can.easily.say.that.it.is.a.written.or.printed.work.consisting.of.pages.
glued.or.sewn.together.along.one.side.and.bound.in.covers.[ABBY.Lingvo.x5].as.the.word.is.
coming.after.an.indefinite.article.and.an.adjective..
In.the.second.example,.on.the.other.hand,.it.is.coming.after.subject.and.it.is.pretty.clear.that.
“book”.is.predicate.of.the.sentence.here..In.this.case,.pupils,.with.their.teacher,.try.to.find.the.

verb.meaning.of.its..These.could.be.only.one.example.of.the.importance.of.convey.in.teaching.
vocabulary.
2.. Check-. examining. something. in. order. to. determine. its. accuracy,. quality. and. being.
sure.that.you.are.on.the.right.way..After.the.first.step,.after.conveying.the.word,.now.it.is.time.
to.check.whether.the.translation.is.proper.or.not..Getting.suitable.versions.of.translation.is.
usually.done.in.this.level.
3.. Consolidate-. is. the. process. of. strengthening. by. practice.. Finding. a. new. word. or.
checking.accurately.don’t.mean.we.have.learnt.new.words..Actually,.the.proverb.“Practice.
makes.perfect”.works.here..Repeating.adequate.numbers.of.times.and.trying.to.get.examples.
with.the.help.of.newly.learnt.words.are.very.necessary..
4.. Connect-.when.you.go.somewhere.for.the.first.time.you.might.usually.try.to.remember.
the.landmarks.by.connecting.them.with.something.else.and.as.a.result.you.never.forget.them..
While.learning.unknown.words.connecting.them.with.other.things.could.also.be.useful..
Although.researchers.all.notice.the.complicate.nature.of.vocabulary.and.acknowledge.that.
the.vocabulary.consists.of.many.degrees.of.knowledge.[Channell,.1988;.Stoller.&.Grabe,.1993,.
1997],.their.arguments.have.been.on.the.issue.whether.we.should.emphasize.the.receptive.or.
productive.knowledge.of.a.word..Nation.(1990,.2008).proposes.that.a.native.speaker.must.
master.the.followings.in.order.to.know.a.word:.the.meaning(s),.written.and.spoken.form,.
grammatical.behavior,.collocations,.register,.associations,.and.frequency.of.the.word..
However,.Schmitt.and.McCarthy.(1997).note.that.such.a.list.gives.just.a.descriptive.picture.
of.a.word,.it.is.best.to.think.of.vocabulary.knowledge.as.an.integrated.whole..Gu.(1994).
perhaps.provides.the.best.working.definition.for.the.minimum.word.knowledge.an.L2.learner.
needs. to. know.. It. should. at. least. include. the. form,. the. referential. meaning,. and. the. basic.
syntactic.behavior.of.each.word.[1;4]
Vocabulary.is.viewed.in.terms.of.the.learners’.background.knowledge.of.concepts.as.well.
as.word-forms..Distinguishing.the.ways.of.word.formation.and.their.pre-fixes.and.suffixes.
with.their.functions.may.be.another.crucial.way.of.learning.more.new.words.faster.and.more.
efficient..
The.current.consensus.can.be.best.summarized.as.the.followings:.
(1).The.learners.of.continuous.teaching.need.more.direct.vocabulary.instruction.before.
reaching.a.threshold.level..
(2).As.learners.proceed,.indirect.vocabulary.teaching.will.gradually.take.over.the.direct.
emphasis.of.vocabulary..
(3).With.the.help.of.4c‘s.teaching.method.boosting.and.strengthening.learner‘s.vocabulary.
