DISTANCE LEARNING IN MODERN SOCIETY

In modern society, with the rapid growth of information specialist is 
required to learn almost entirely career. Previously, you could afford to learn 
once and you can use gained knowledge forever. This stock of knowledge was 
enough for a lifetime. Today, the idea of "education through life" leads to the 
need to find new methods of knowledge transfer and learning technologies. 
Using of information technologies and distance learning opens up new

opportunities for continue training of specialists and retraining of specialists, 
obtaining a second education, makes training more accessible. At the same time, 
the need for advanced training in basic education or lifelong retraining develops 
distance learning skills. With the development of information technology have 
appeared new approaches of distance learning. In consequence were established 
a number of distance learning courses and entire distance learning universities 
around the world. 
Distance learning is the interaction of teachers and students on a distance, 
which reflecting all the essential components of the educational process (aims, 
content, methods, organizational forms, training tools) and implemented by 
specific means of information and communication technologies or other means 
that provide interactivity. Distance learning is an independent form of education, 
and information technologies in this process are the leading means. 
Some interesting facts: The budget of the Open University of Great 
Britain is 400 million pounds. More than half of the registered students of the 
country study at The Turkish Distance University. The national Open University 
of Indira Gandhi has more than 1 million students. 81% of all U.S. institutions 
of higher education offer at least one distance learning course. There are 67% of 
US educational institutions considered a distance learning is a strategically 
important way of their development. "Today we have more than 100 million 
students of e-Learning programs around the world. The total market volume in 
2003 amounted to $5 billion, of which $3.5 billion is in Europe" – reported 
Director of ―e-LearnExpo‖ Sally-Ann Moore at the 1-st international conference 
on e-education in Moscow. 
A comparison of the effectiveness of distance and classroom learning 
based on a survey of the U.S. teachers in institutions offering distance learning 
courses according to 57% of teachers, the results of distance learning are not 
inferior or even superior to the results of traditional classes. More than 33.3% of 
the surveyed teachers believe that in the coming years the results of distance 
learning will surpass the results of classroom training. 
Availability and possibility of learning is an opportunity to learn far from 
the place of learning without leaving your home or office. This allows a modern 
specialist to study almost all his life, without special trips, vacations, combining 
with the main activity. At the same time focusing on training in the evening and 
on weekends. 
As a rule, distance learning is cheaper than regular training, primarily by 
reducing the cost of moving, living in another city, reducing the cost of 
organizing the courses themselves (no need to pay for the room for classes, less 
staff, the cost of teachers can be reduced, etc.). So IBM has developed an 
introductory e-Learning course for each new Manager. The traditional full-time 
six-week course is now taught at 75% e-Learning and 25% in the classroom. At 
the time, students can note the following advantages: the program has saved $24

million, the cost of one day of training has decreased by 3 times - from $400 to 
$135. The volume of educational content has increased by 5 times. 
Freedom and flexibility, access to quality education are new opportunities 
to choose a course of study. It is very easy to choose several courses from 
different universities, from different countries. You can simultaneously study in 
different places, comparing courses with each other. Over time, the network will 
be the best distance learning courses in various specialties. There is an 
opportunity to study in the best educational institutions, the most effective 
technologies, the most qualified teachers. 
Educational institution which offer distance learning can involve more 
foreign students, to increase the number of students from host country too. 
Disadvantages of distance learning, insufficient computer literacy of 
teachers and students, lack of experience in distance learning, many teachers and 
students are not yet ready for this method of teaching, preferring classical 
education. 
There will be need for a computer and Internet access and through that to 
possibility getting of information. Moreover, its required to have technical 
equipment, a capability to use a computer and access to the Internet, readiness to 
use distance learning tools. 
In conclusion, distance education allows to implement two basic 
principles of modern education – "education for all‖ and "education through 
life‖. Experience shows that a student studying remotely becomes more 
independent, mobile and responsible. Without these qualities he will not be able 
to learn. If they were not initially, but the motivation to learn is great, they 
develop and at the end of training specialists are really in demand in the market.
