8. The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20% in the last ten years.
Discuss the causes and effects of this disturbing trend
In the last decade, western countries have seen a rise in the number of children who are overweight. Specifically, it has incremented by 20 per cent. This essay will discuss some of the reasons behind it and the consequences of this tendency. To begin with, it can be seen that now children are living a more sedentary life. In comparison with years ago, young people spend more time at home playing video games than in the park running with their friends. The manager of Central Park reports that in the last decade there has been a reduction of 45 per cent in the number of children that go to the park and perform physical sports. This example is a clear representation of children living a sedentary life which contributes to being overweight.
Children being overweight have various negatives effects on their lives. Firstly, it can cause them to be bullied as they might look different than the other kids. In relation to this, a study shows that children who are obese tend to be bullied more at school than those who have a normal weight. Secondly, younger people who have a higher weight are at risk of suffering from cardiovascular problems. For instance, being obese causes the heart to work harder which could result in strokes. So, children who are overweight could have impacts on their social lives and health. In conclusion, in the last decade, more children have become overweight. It has happened as children are living a more sedentary life, as well as they are eating more fast food than vegetables. Overall, It has contributed to reducing their quality of life.
9. Nowadays we have become a throwaway society with where it is common to throw devices and gadgets instead of repairing them. Why is this happening and what are the effects of this?
Nowadays, people are accustomed to discarding their damaged devices and tools instead of fixing them. There are a variety of reasons for this which can cause detrimental effects on the environment. In my opinion, three main factors are to blame for this environmental issue. Firstly, in some situations, the gadgets have a poor quality as their repairing would be impossible if they cannot work properly. Secondly, some countries do not have enough facilities such as essential accessories or experts for mending the broken tools. For instance, underdeveloped countries which import some of their machines from abroad might be unable to supply their required equipment to fix damaged products. Finally, in the case of spoiled devices, it is sometimes more convenient for people to purchase a replacement, because it just takes less than an hour in comparison with the longtime of repairing. Undoubtedly, discarded instruments could produce harmful effects on the atmosphere. The major impact is that these devices are often converted to trashes which are not recyclable and can increase pollution. Besides, when gadgets are not be fixed, there would be needed a high consumption of energy for constructing a similar one, wasting both time and energy. Furthermore, most machines and tools are manufactured from raw materials which will be threatened with lacking in the long run because of finishing their resources. Therefore, it is preferable to mend damaged devices, especially the tools that are fabricated by non-renewable resources. In conclusion, although in modern society individuals tend to jettison damaged machines and gadgets instead of repairing them, I think countries should introduce a scheme to prevent the negative effects of this misbehavior.
10. Today, many people spend less and less time at their home. What’s the reason for it? What are the effects of this trend on individuals and society?
It is common practice that many citizens are spending less and less time at their home. The essay will discuss the reason behind this problem and the effects of this trend. The main reason is the work influence on numerous people, which gives rise to this problem
nowadays. To increase the profit of companies, employers assign so many tasks that individuals who need to earn money to support their families have to work overtime to accomplish the work, which would occupy most of the people's time. In addition to this, traffic is another contributing factor. Most of the cities are becoming increasingly crowded due to the expanding population and the sharp rise in the number of private vehicles. Studies reveal that one-third of an individual’s time is spent on traffic jams. As far as I am concerned, we should not be blind to the effects of this practice. Firstly, such an imbalanced lifestyle that people cannot eat at their home, which further causes the individual's health problems. For illustrate, humans have to eat certain food riching fat and sugar will improve the risks of obesity, if they spend very little time at home. Besides, it’s generally believed that longterm prosperity requires the contribution of talent and competent citizens, which cannot be realized without good family education. If people spend less and less time at their home, they are more likely to neglect the education of the younger generation, which causes their children cannot become responsible social members in the future. In conclusion, the reason many people spend most of their time outdoors is because of their work or traffic, which are detrimental to both the physical health and the long-term prosperity of society.
