Doremus Jessup
Dormus Jessup, the story's hero, is a liberal newspaper editor in Vermont's Green Mountains in 1935, when the country is in danger of falling under the rule of a fascist demagogue seeking to be elected president. When this event occurs, Doremus at first denies the seriousness of the situation. At first he is forced to cooperate with the fascist regime, but over time he becomes the leader of the local cell of the underground resistance movement. Dormes turns out to be a brave and staunch fighter for democracy.
Shad Ledue
Oscar ("Shad") Ledue is an angry, sharp, and furious master for Jessups who are jealous of the middle class lifestyle. When he is fired by Doremus Jessup, he becomes the leader of the local Minute Man group and rises in its ranks. He is not ashamed to follow the regime’s instructions, which include murder and torture. Eventually, Ledue falls into a concentration camp for his illegal activities and is killed by inmates.
Lorinda Pike
Lorinda Pike is a feminist, business owner and lover of Doremus Jessup. She is known in the city as an eccentric who constantly supports liberal causes. Lorinda is a strong and fearless woman who intervenes in the underground resistance and encourages Doremus Jessup to fight against to fasict. She eventually leaves Doremus to open a new underground cell in another city because she believes their relationship is interfering with their resistance work.
Sissy Jessup
Sissy (Cecilia) Jessup is a defiant high school senior who joins the resistance. She has a glitter personality and two suitors. She is also a prospective feminist who immediately wants to fight the new regime that is taking away people's rights. She gets involved in the underground movement with her father and is instrumental in having Shad Ledue, a local Minute Man who has been terrorizing the town and her family, put behind bars in a concentration camp.
