HaTikvah

Kol ‘od ba-levav penimah

Nefesh yehudi homiyah,

Ulefa’atei mizrach kadimah,

‘Ayin letziyon tzofiyah;
‘Od lo avdah tikvateinu,

Hatikvah bat shnot alpayim,

Lihyot ‘am chofshi be’artzeinu,

Eretz tziyon vi-Y’rushalayim.

HaTikvah

As long as in the heart, within,

A Jewish soul still yearns,

And onward, towards the ends of the east,

An eye still gazes toward Zion;
Our hope is not yet lost,

The hope of two thousand years,

To be a free people in our land,

The land of Zion and Jerusalem.

Simchu Na

Simchu na, simchu na, ufirku ha-ol

Chag lanu vesimchah, yom lanu gadol.

Me-ayin yatzarnu yesh,

Yad zoreʻa ve-choresh,
Selaʻ ve-tzur eitan,
Mayim shefaʻ rav natan,
‘Oz, ‘otzmah va-cho'ach.

ʻUr, ʻur hitoshesh,

Toch maʻagal goʻesh,
Mishneh ‘avod va-‘amol,
ʻOz rucheinu bal yipol
ʻUrah, ʻurah, ʻur ‘ur ‘ur ʻurah.

Rejoice

Rejoice, rejoice and throw off your burden. It’s a holiday, a time for joy, a great day!

From nothing we created something;

A hand sowing and plowing,
A firm stone and rock
Gave plenty of water,
Power, force, and strength.

Arise, get up, pull yourself together

In the rushing circle
We have worked double time,
But our spirit will not flag.
Get up, get up, rise and get up.

As for man, his days are as grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof knoweth it no more. But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children's children;

וְחֶסֶד ה', מֵעוֹלָם וְעַד-עוֹלָם  עַל-יְרֵאָיו;

Under your white stars

Extend to me your white hand.

My words are tears;

I would put them in your hand.

See, the sparkle dims

In the glimpse from my cellar.

And I have no corner

To present them back to you.

Loyf ikh hekher, iber dekher

Un ikh zukh: vu bistu, vu?

And I want, dear God,

To entrust to you my possessions

Because a fire builds in me,

And my days are in fire.

Only in cellars and holes

Weeps a murderous rest.

I run higher, over rooftops

And I seek: where are you, where?

Ghosts pursue me, finding me

In stairwells and courtyards.

I hang a cracked guitar string

And I sing this way to you:

Under your white stars

Extend to me your white hand.

My words are tears;

I would put them in your hand.

You and I will change the world.

You and I, and then all will follow

Others have said it before,

It doesn’t matter – you and I will change the world.

You and I will try from the beginning.

It will be hard, no matter, it’s not too bad.

Others have said it before,

It doesn’t matter –

You and I will change the world.

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

Upon the willows in the midst thereof we hanged up our harps.

For there they that led us captive asked of us words of song, and our tormentors asked of us mirth: ‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion.’

How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?

If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I remember thee not; if I set not Jerusalem above my greatest joy.

Remember, O Lord, against the children of Edom the day of Jerusalem; who said: ‘Raise it, raise it, even to the foundation thereof.’

O daughter of Babylon, that are to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that repays you as you have served us.

Happy shall he be, that takes and dashes your little ones against the rock.

It is the first among the holy festivals, commemorating the exodus from Egypt. For You chose us, and sanctified us, out of all nations, and with love and favor You invested us with Your Holy Sabbath.

And the Angels Sing

We meet, and the angels sing.

The angels sing the sweetest song I ever heard.
You speak, and the angels sing.
Or am I breathing music into every word?

Suddenly, the setting is strange.
I can see water and Moonlight beaming.
Silver waves that break on some undiscovered shore
Suddenly, I see it all change.
Long winter nights with the candles gleaming.
Through it all your face that I adore.

You smile, and the angels sing.
And though it's just a gentle murmur at the start.
We kiss, and the angels sing.
And leave their music ringing in my heart!

Chorus of Israelites

Mourn, ye afflicted children, the remains

Of captive Judah, mourn in solemn strains;
Your sanguine hopes of liberty give o'er,
Your hero, friend and father is no more.
O Father, whose Almighty pow'r
The Heav'ns, and earth, and seas adore;
The hearts of Judah, thy delight,
In one defensive band unite.
And grant a leader bold, and brave,
If not to conquer, born to save.
Hear us, O Lord, on Thee we call,
Resolv'd on conquest, or a glorious fall.
Fall'n is the foe; so fall Thy foes, O Lord,
Where warlike Judas wields his righteous sword!
Israelitish Woman and Man
Sion now her head shall raise,
Tune your harps to songs of praise.
Israelites
Sion now her head shall raise,
Tune your harps to songs of praise.
Israelitish Woman and Man
Hail, hail, Judea, happy land!
Salvation prospers in his hand.
Israelites
Hail, hail, Judea, happy land!
Salvation prospers in his hand.
Judas Maccabaeus
Sound an alarm! Your silver trumpets sound,
And call the brave, and only brave, around.
Who listeth, follow: to the field again!
Justice with courage is a thousand men.
Sound an alarm. . . da capo
Israelites

We hear, we hear the pleasing dreadful call,

And follow thee to conquest; if to fall,
For laws, religion, liberty, we fall.
We never, never will bow down
To the rude stock or sculptur'd stone.
We worship God, and God alone.
Youths
See, the conqu'ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets, beat the drums.
Sports prepare, the laurel bring,
Songs of triumph to him sing.

Virgins
See the godlike youth advance!
Breathe the flutes, and lead the dance;
Myrtle wreaths, and roses twine,
To deck the hero's brow divine.

Israelites
See, the conqu'ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets, beat the drums.
Sports prepare, the laurel bring,
Songs of triumph to him sing.
See, the conqu'ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets, beat the drums.

Sing unto God, and high affections raise,

To crown this conquest with unmeasur'd praise.
Simon
Rejoice, O Judah, and, in songs divine,
With cherubim and seraphim harmonious join!
Israelites
Hallelujah! Amen.
