Fergana

The area is 6.7 thousand sq. Km. Its population is more than 3 million 683 thousand 300 people (as of January 1, 2019). Fergana region has 15 districts, 9 cities and 197 towns.



The region includes the plains of the valley, the foothills of the Alay and Turkestan ridges. The Isfayram, Shohimardon, Sokh and Isfara rivers are important for agriculture. Several irrigation canals have been dug in the Naryn and Karadarya rivers (see them in the study atlas). The region is second only to Tashkent in terms of gross industrial output.

Fergana region specializes in cotton and grain growing, as well as silkworm breeding. The main part of the field is planted with cotton and wheat. Wheat and barley are grown on spring lands, and rice on dry lands. Corn, white corn, and alfalfa are grown interchangeably with cotton in all districts.

Conditions in the region are favorable for gardening and viticulture. The region is famous for its pomegranates and figs. There are more pastures in Fergana than in Andijan. Livestock consists mainly of sheep and goats. The province provides about 20 percent of the cocoons grown in the country.

The industry is multi-sectoral, with heavy industry playing a significant role. The oil refining, chemical and energy industries are distinguished not only in the economic region, but also in the republic. There are two oil refineries, one in Fergana and the other in Altiyarik. Mechanical engineering, metallurgy and building materials industries are also important. The light and food industries are based on agriculture. Industrial enterprises are concentrated in the Fergana-Margilan industrial region and in the Kokand and Quvasoy industrial hubs.

Transportation. The area is well supplied with railways and highways. The region exports cotton fiber and cottonseed oil, silk, cotton yarn, knitted goods, dried fruit, canned fruit, mineral fertilizers and cement. Timber, various equipment, tractors, cotton machines, grain, flour, sugar and consumer goods will be delivered.

Cities. There are 9 cities in the region. Fergana is an important industrial, transport and cultural center. The city is well watered and the summers are cool. There are two IEMs operating in the city. The integrated energy system of the economic zone is formed on the basis of these IEMs. The city has branches of Fergana State University, Polytechnic Institute, Tashkent University of Information Technologies, Tashkent Medical Academy and the Uzbek State Institute of Arts and Culture. There is a silk research institute. Parks, fountains, alleys, shaded areas give the city a special charm. The great astronomer, mathematician and geographer Ahmad al-Farghani was born here.

Margilan has long been known as the center of silk (atlas) production. The city has cotton, leather and silk factories. The textile skills of the people of Margilan have greatly improved and spread. Margilan silk factory is one of the largest textile enterprises in the country. The plant is also a major training center. There is also a Silk Research Institute. The famous jurist Burhaniddin Marginoni was born here.

Kokand is located in the western part of the Fergana region, on a highway. It is followed by railways and highways to Tashkent, Namangan and Fergana. During the years of independence, Kokand's industry developed and the city became an important industrial hub. The city's superphosphate plant, as well as electrical and textile machinery plants, are among the largest in the country. The city has long been the capital of the Kokand Khanate. It is one of the major cultural centers in the region.



Quvasoy was built in 1954 on the site of a working town. Based on its wealth of lime, marl, gypsum and clay near the city, it has become an industrial center producing building materials. Now there is a plant consisting of cement, slate, lime and brick factories. This plant provides a significant part of the cement produced in the country. The production of bowls, bowls, teapots, bowls and other utensils at the Quvasoy porcelain factory is increasing year by year.

Rishtan is a center for the production of ceramics. The pottery cooperatives were merged and turned into a combine. At present, the plant produces more than 20 types of products.
